Halt, you two, and question, in the grounds of the solitary sandy rise,
Stop, and ask in the wilderness of Al-Ajraʿ Al-Fard
the traces the clouds have erased since my departure.
About its landmarks which the clouds have erased after me

The effacing winds dragged their skirts across them,
And the twilights have flowed over it
although they grow sweeter with distance.
As if it becomes more fragrant from afar

Turn aside toward them, you two, and ask after their companion,
And bend over it, then ask about its companion
even though questioning the traces avails nothing.
And if questioning landmarks is fruitless

But it is a soul in turmoil, and a sigh
It is a soul that surges and an outburst
that relieves anguish and quenches yearning.
That cools from misery and extinguishes from passion

My companions' spring abodes, and my loved ones' days—
The dwellings of those I loved and the covenant of my loved ones
may God water that bygone time with pouring, recurrent rain,
May Allah water that covenant overflowing with loyalty

and may there fall upon them, from Muhammad's generous hand,
And it flowed from the generosity of Muhammad's palm
a ceaseless downpour, without lightning or thunder.
Pouring, thundering without lightning or thunder

For the rain most worthy to water the soil
And the most deserving of rain is that which waters the earth
is surely pure rain that fell from the source of glory.
A virtuous rain from the source of glory

A leader of guidance, whose lineage is from the house of Sa'd,
The imam of guidance from the family of Saʿd, its carpenter
and championing guidance is his legacy to the sons of Sa'd.
And the victory of guidance is its inheritance for the children of Saʿd

A cloud of bounty showered the lands, and they began
A cloud of dew that brought abundance to the countries until they
to trail the hem of plenty and a life of ease.
Dragged the tail of fertility and comfortable living

And a pure branch [uncertain reading] from noble roots,
And a virtuous branch from generous roots
he endowed them, as a sandal thong is cut from hide.
Endowed like an ankle is solidly attached to a shin

Thus in his radiance one glimpses the Surah of Morning Brightness,
From its lights you see the surah of Ad-Duha
and from his deeds one learns by heart the Surah of Praise.
And from its effects you learn the surah Al-Fatihah

One of the radiant company and the lords who
Among the outstanding and eminent nobles
bring relief in great calamity and keep their covenant.
Who bring rain in times of drought and fulfill promises

Muhammad, you have revived the faith of Muhammad,
Muhammad, you have revived the religion of Muhammad
and fulfilled the earlier promise of victory for guidance.
And fulfilled the victory of guidance, precedent of promise

You rose upon the world with the most auspicious brow,
You rose over the world with the blessings of a new moon
through which the light of good fortune shone in the cradle.
Which illuminated the light of happiness in the cradle

How often our eyes watched for its rising,
And how many eyes of ours anticipated its rising
and God's victory was realized in that vigil.
So the victory of Allah was realized in that anticipation

and on a bond of kingship: your Lord has been a guardian
And the knot of a kingdom your Lord has guaranteed
over it; and genuine good fortune needs no assay.
And the noble origin of Saʿd suffices instead of payment

for within it even opposites found fellowship with one another.
So opposites became intimate with opposites

My master, this matter is serious, and it only befits
one who meets seriousness with seriousness is fit for it.
One who deals with seriousness, seriously

And he imparted it from the sincere adviser
a truthful counsel that has spoken to you of affection.
A true bequest expressing affection for you

Spread justice among your subjects, and you will win their love,
Dispense justice among the subjects to gain their love
and let right govern them in loosening and binding.
And judge them by truth, whether binding or loosing

No hand but God's is above it
and among a master's virtues is gentleness toward the servant.
And it is characteristic of the Master to be gentle with servants

And be among them an ear for the call of the supplicant

When the needy extend the palm of the beseecher

They are the limit in slaying the enemy, do you see
any defense for one who meets the enemy without an edge?
Any defense for one who encounters the enemy unprepared?

for whoever employs consultation does not stray from the right course.
For whoever consults attains no error in his aim

firm in covenant, keen of edge,
Bound by pact, keen of limit

That will one day return what was lent

We are needless of the sea that withdrew in fury
nor the star of high glory, with the auspicious moon.
And the star of highness with the felicitous moon

Life the river harvested from the trees of death,
A life the river reaped from the tree of harmony
swiftly, and a gain born of loss.
Quickly, and an intellect formed from loss

These two swords: time has sharpened one long ago

Polished, and time now returns the other to its sheath

Your protected kingdom, safe from every misfortune

By the care of the One who suffices instead of supporters and soldiers

I raced the steeds of poetry determinedly
and made the ears of meanings hear, despite my distance.
And made the ears of meanings listen in my distance

So they came, and in its phrases folds of mysteries
swiftly, their eyelids drowsy with sleeplessness.
Hastening, and in its eyelids the mark of joy
