بَرِئْتُI have renounced لِلَّهِfor God مِنْfrom حَوْلِيmy strength وَمِنْand from حِيَلِيmy stratagems
إِنْif نَامَsleeps عَنِّيheedless of me وَلِيٌّa protector فَهْوَthen He is خَيْرُthe best وَلِيprotector
For God, I have renounced my strength and my stratagems.
I disavow all around me and all my tricks,
If a protector sleeps, heedless of me, He is the best protector.
If my patron sleeps, he is the best patron.
I have come to be مَاnot لِيfor me مِنْany عَطْفٍkindness أُؤَمِّلُهُI hope for it
مِنْfrom غَيْرِهِanyone other than Him فِيin مُهِمَّاتِpressing affairs وَلاَand no بَدَلِsubstitute
I now have no kindness to hope for
I have no one now from whom I hope for kindness
From anyone but Him in pressing affairs, nor any substitute.
Other than Him in my concerns and no substitute.
مَاnot كُنْتُI was أَحْسَبُexpecting أَنْthat أُرْمَىI would be cast بِقَاصِيَةٍinto a remote place
لِلْهَجْرِof abandonment أَقْطَعُI traverse فِيهَاin it جَانِبَa stretch of الْمَلَلِtedium
I never thought I would be cast into a remote place
I never thought I would be flung into desolation,
Of abandonment, where I traverse a stretch of tedium,
Where I endure the far side of boredom.
مِنْfrom بَعْدِafter مَاthat خَلَصَتْmade its way through نَحْوِيtoward me الشَّفَاعَةُintercession مَاwhat
بَيْنَbetween الْفَلاَthe wastes وَالدُّجَىand darkness وَالْبِيضِand gleaming swords وَالأَسَلِand spears
After intercession had reached me amid
After mediation worked for me, what's between
The wastes, darkness, gleaming swords, and spears.
Dawn, twilight, white and night is not fulfilled.
إِنْif كُنْتُI was لَسْتُI am not بِأَهِلِworthy لِلَّذِيof that which طَمَحَتْaspired
إِلَيْهِto it نَفْسِيmy soul وَأَهْوَىand inclined نَحْوهُtoward it أَمَلِيmy hope
If I am unworthy of what was aspired to
If I'm not suited for what my soul desired
By my soul, and toward which my hope inclined,
And yearned for in hope, how can it be attained
فَكَيْفَso how يُلْفَىis found وَلاَand not تُرْعَىis heeded وَسِيلَتُهُhis intercessory appeal
دَخِيلُa seeker of refuge قَبْرِthe tomb of أَمِيرthe Commander of الْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithful عَلِيAli
How, then, can he be left with his appeal unheeded—
Without regard for access to the tomb of the Prince
A seeker of refuge at the tomb of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali?
Of the Faithful, Ali? After my state with him was renowned
مِنْfrom بَعْدِafter مَاthat اشْتَهَرَتْbecame known حَالِيmy plight بِهِat it وَسَرَتْand traveled
بِهَاwith it الرَّكَائِبُthe riding beasts فِيin سَهْلٍa plain وَفِيand in جَبَلِa mountain
After my plight there became known, and word of it traveled
And the messengers spread it on flatland and hill,
With the riding beasts over plains and mountains;
The results of which are clear when pondered
وَالرُّسْلُand the messengers تَتْرَىcome in succession وَلاَand not تَخْفَىare hidden نَتَائِجُهاtheir results
And messengers come in succession, their results plain
In word or deed. I have no dawn to look to
Upon reflection, whether in word or deed.
As though my worries stretched the darkness for me.
وَلاَand no لِليْلِيَfor my night مِنْany صُبْحٍdawn أُطَالِعُهُI behold it
كَأَنَّas though هَمِّيَmy sorrow قَدْindeed مَدَّhad stretched الدُّجُنَّةَthe darkness لِيfor me
And my night has no dawn for me to behold,
If only I had joined hands with Marzuq's son,
As though my sorrow had stretched the darkness out for me.
And he were the arbiter among the best of states,
لَوْif أَنَّنِيthat I بِابْنِto the son of مَرْزُوقٍMarzuq عَقَدْتُI had bound يَدِيmy hand
وكانand he was محتكماًholding sway فيin خيرةthe choicest of الدوّلdynasties
Had I bound my hand to Ibn Marzuq,
My distress would have led to relief
And he held sway in the choicest of dynasties,
And my sorrow would have expired from emaciation.
لكانwould have كربيmy distress قدalready أفضىled إلىto فرجيmy relief
وَكَانَand would have حُزْنِيَmy sorrow قَدْalready أَوْفَىdrawn near عَلَىto جَذَلِjoy
Then my distress would have ended in my relief,
I blamed - I did not beware its pitfalls –
And my sorrow would have come to the verge of joy.
I who am drowning, so why would I fear getting wet?
أَلْمَمْتُI ventured بِالْعَتْبِinto reproach لَمْnot أَحْذَرْI feared مَوَاقِعَهُits consequences
أَنَاI الْغَرِيقُthe drowned man فَمَاso what خَوْفِيmy fear مِنَof الْبَلَلِwetness
I ventured to reproach, not fearing its consequences;
I'm not ungrateful for the blessings I was given,
I am the drowned man—so why should I fear getting wet?
But the soul cannot desist from hope.
وَلَسْتُand I do not أَجْحَدُdeny مَاwhat خُوِّلْتُI was granted مِنْof نِعَمٍblessings
لَكِنَّهَاbut it is النَّفْسُthe soul لاَnot تَنْفَكُّit parts عَنْfrom أَمَلِhope
And I do not deny the blessings bestowed on me,
I do not despair of a promise made to me,
But it is the soul—it never lets go of hope.
For man was created of haste.
وَلَسْتُand I do not أَيْأَسُdespair مِنْof وَعْدٍa promise وُعِدْتُI was promised بِهِof it
وَإنَّمَاand only خُلِقَwas created الإنْسَانُhumankind مِنْfrom عَجَلِhaste
And I do not despair of a promise made to me;
And man was created of haste alone.
