إذاwhen سافَرَtravels السّلطانُthe sultan نحوَtoward مُنكَّبٍMunakkab
ولمْand do not أتّبِعْهُfollow him جاهِداًstriving hard سقَطَfalls away الحَرَجْblame
When the sultan travels toward Munakkab,
and I do not strain to follow him, I incur no blame.
فمِنْfor among عِقَبٍmountain passes مَنْwhoever ضَلّloses his way فيin شِعْبِهاtheir ravine هَوَىplummets
ومِنْand among درَجٍstairways مَنْwhoever زَلّslips فيin ضَنْكِهاtheir narrowness دَرَجْperishes
For there are mountain passes—whoever strays in their ravines plummets;
and stairways—whoever slips in their narrow confines perishes.
عَسىperhaps مَنْhe who أضاقَconstricted الصّدْرَthe breast منْthrough حُبِّهhis love لهاfor it

Perhaps he whose love for it has constricted the breast
will grant us relief through his hatred of it.
