جَاءَتْshe came مُعَذِّبَتِيmy tormentress فِيin غَيْهَبِthe blackness of الغَسَقِnightfall
كَأنَّهَاas though she were الكَوْكَبُthe star الدُرِيُّpearly-bright فِيin الأُفُقِthe horizon
My tormentress came in the blackness of nightfall,
As though she were the radiant star on the horizon.
فَقُلْتُso I said نَوَّرْتِنِيyou illuminated me يَاO خَيْرَbest زَائِرَةٍfemale visitor
أمَاdid … not? خَشِيتِyou fear مِنَof الحُرَّاسِthe guards فِيon الطُّرُقِthe roads
So I said, “You have brought me light, O finest visitor!
Did you not fear the guards along the roads?”
فَجَاوَبَتْنِيthen she answered me وَwhile دَمْعُtears of العَيْنِthe eye يَسْبِقُهَاprecede her
مَنْwhoever يَرْكَبِsails البَحْرَthe sea لاdoes not يَخْشَىfear مِنَof الغَرَقِdrowning
Then she answered me, her tears coming first:
“Whoever sails the sea has no fear of drowning.”
فَقلتُthen I said هذيthese أحاديثٌtales ملفّقةٌfabricated
موضوعةٌinvented قدْalready أتتْhave come منْfrom قولِthe words of مُختَلقِa fabricator
Then I said, “These are fabricated tales,
Invented, sprung from a fabricator’s words.”
فقالتْthen she said وحقِّby the sanctity of عيونيmy eyes عزَّmighty it is منْas قَسَمٍan oath
وماand what is علىupon جَبْهَتيmy brow منْof لًؤلؤpearls of الرَّمَقِlingering life
Then she said, “By the sanctity of my eyes—what a mighty oath!—
And by the pearls of lingering life upon my brow,
إنّيindeed I أحِبُّكَI love you حباًwith a love لاno نفادَend لهُto it
ماas long as دامَremains فيin مُهجتيmy soul شيءٌanything منَof الرَّمَقِlingering life
Indeed, I love you with a love that has no end,
As long as any breath of life remains within my soul.”
فقمتُso I rose ولْهانَlove-distraught منْfrom وجديmy longing أقبّلُهاto kiss her
زِحْتُI drew aside اللثامَthe face veil رأيتُI saw البدرَthe full moon مُعْتَنَقِembraced
So I rose, crazed by my longing, to kiss her.
I drew aside the veil and saw the full moon in my embrace.
قبّلتُهاI kissed her قبّلتنيshe kissed me وهيwhile she قائلةٌwas saying
قبلتَyou kissed فايَmy mouth فلاso do not تبخلْbe stingy علىtoward عُنقيmy neck
I kissed her; she kissed me, saying:
“You have kissed my mouth, so do not withhold your kisses from my neck.”
قلتُI said العناقُembracing حَرامٌforbidden فيin شريعَتِناour religious law
قالتْshe said أياO سيّديmy lord واجعَلْهُand lay it فيupon عُنقيmy neck
I said, “Embracing is forbidden under our religious law.”
She said, “O my lord, then lay it upon my neck.”
