Has brought you glad tidings of victory before its arrival.
طَوَىfolded up الْبُعْدُthe distance عَنْout of شَوْقٍlonging وَحَثَّand urged on رِكَابَهُits mounts
وَأوْشَكَand nearly فِيat مَغْنَاكَyour dwelling حَطَّsetting down رِحَالِهِits baggage
It folded away the distance in longing and spurred its mounts,
And nearly set down its baggage at your dwelling.
وَلَمَّاand when شَجاَهُgrieved it الُبُعْدُdistance عَنْكَfrom you وَشَفَّهُand wasted it away
تَبَدَّىbecame visible نُحُولُthe thinness of الشَّوْقِlonging فَوْقَupon هِلاَلِهِits crescent
And when distance from you grieved it and wasted it away,
The thinness born of longing showed upon its crescent.
وَلَوْلاَand were it not for اخْتِصَاصُthe singling out by الشَّرْعِsacred law يَوْماًa day بِعَيْنِهِthat very one
وَأَنَّاand that we نُوَفِّيwe accord الأَمْرَthe command حَقَّdue امْتِثَالِهِobedience to it
And were it not that sacred law singles out a particular day,
And that we give the command its due obedience,
لَمَاwould not امْتَازَbe distinguished يَوْمthe day of الْعِيدِthe feast مِنْfrom يَوْمa day غَيْرِهِother than it
فَذِكْرُكَfor remembrance of you عِيدٌa feast كُلُّهُall of it فِيin احْتِفَالِهِits celebration
The feast day would be no different from any other day,
For remembrance of you is a feast, all of it celebration.
وَدُونَكَهَاand take it كَالرَّوْضِlike a garden عَاهَدَهُhas tended it الْحَيَاthe rain
وَجَرَّand trailed عَلَيْهِover it الْفَضْلُexcellence ذَيْلَthe hem of اعْتِدَالِهِits harmony
And take this, like a garden tended by the rain,
And over which excellence has trailed the hem of its harmony.
إذَاif لَمْdoes not يَكُنْexist فِيin السَّيْفِthe sword مِنْfrom طِيبِthe goodness of طَبْعِهِits temper
لَهُfor it صَيْقَلٌa burnisher لَمْis not يُنْتَفَعْbenefited بِصِقَالِهِby polishing it
If a sword does not possess, through the goodness of its temper,
A burnisher of its own, polishing it is of no avail.
