أَأَبْصَرْتَhave you beheld? مِنِّيof me فِيin الْمَصَانِعِthe edifices قُبَّةًa dome
تَأَنَّقَworked exquisitely فِيَّin me السَّعْدُgood fortune مِنْfrom كُلِّevery جَانِبِside
Have you beheld in me, among the edifices, a dome?
Good fortune has adorned me exquisitely on every side.
فَتُتْلَىso are recited سُطُورُthe lines of الْكَتْبِthe books فَوْقِيَabove me دَائِماًalways
وَتُعْرَضُand are paraded مِنْfrom تَحْتِيbeneath me سُطُورُthe ranks of الْكَتَائِبِthe battalions
So the lines of books are always recited above me,
And beneath me the ranks of battalions are paraded.
وَفِيand in سَاحَتِيmy courtyard مَسْعىًa place of striving لِطَالِبِfor a seeker of رَحْمَةٍmercy
وَمَأَمَنُand a refuge for مُرْتَاعِa frightened one وَمَوْقِفُand a station for تَائِبِa penitent
And in my courtyard is a place of striving for one seeking mercy,
And a refuge for the frightened, and a station for the penitent.
فَقُلْso say فِيabout إِنِّيindeed I am لِلْمُؤَمِّلِfor the hopeful one كَعْبَةٌa Kaaba
وَإِنْand though كُنْتُI was قَدْalready أَبْرِزْتُI was presented فِيin زِيِّthe guise of كَاعِبِa maiden with budding breasts
So say of me: I am a Kaaba for the hopeful,
Though I have been presented in the guise of a maiden with budding breasts.
أَنَاI الْغَادَةُthe graceful maiden الْحَسْنَاءُthe beautiful one يُغْنِيsuffices جَمَالُهَاher beauty
عَنِin place of الدُّرِّpearls مِنْfrom فَوْقِabove الطُّلَىnecks وَالتَّرَائِبِand bosoms
I am the beautiful, graceful maiden whose beauty dispenses
With pearls upon necks and bosoms.
وَمَاand not الْحْسْنُbeauty إِلاَّexcept مَاwhat يَكْونُis طَبيعَةًnatural
بِلاَwithout جُهْدِthe effort of مُحْتَالٍa contriver وَلاَnor كَسْبِthe earnings of كَاسِبِan earner
And beauty is nothing but what is natural,
Without a contriver's effort or an earner's earnings.
وَمِنْand of آيِتِيmy wonder أَنَّيthat I عَلَىdespite حَالِthe state of عِزَّتِيmy dignity
قَعَدْتُI sat بِبَابِat the gate of الْمُلْكِsovereignty مَقْعَدَin the seat of حَاجِبِa chamberlain
And a wonder of mine is that, for all my dignity,
I have sat at the royal gate, in a chamberlain's seat.
أَدُلُّI point عَلَىto مَاwhat حَازَهُhe has attained it مِنْof جَلاَلِةٍmajesty
وَكَمْand many a شَاهِدٍwitness أَبْدَيrevealed مَحَاسِنَthe merits of غَائِبِone absent
I point to the majesty he has attained,
And many a witness has revealed an absent one's merits.
فَدَامَso may he endure جَمِيعَunited الشَّمْلِthe company فِيin ظِلِّthe shade of نِعْمَةٍa blessing
مِنَfrom اللهِGod مَشْمٌولاًenfolded بِحُسْنِin the goodness of الْعَوَاقِبِthe outcomes
So may he endure, his company united, in the shade of a blessing
From God, enfolded in favorable outcomes.
