Time passes, and every mortal departs,

save fair remembrance, for it alone endures.

Nothing remains of Kisra's vaulted hall, after that

great gathering, save remembrance in the pages.

    Would al-Saffah, al-Mansur, and

al-Mahdi have been remembered at all,

or al-Rashid, al-Amin, and his brother,

but for the sharp point of the copyist's reed pen?

The dust returned, as was decreed

for every creature by the Creator's wisdom,

save everlasting praise, sweet of scent,

offering an account of noble character.
