I fell for him, from the spreading tree of generosity and valor,

a slender bough that toys with hope and despair,

adept at wielding the reed pen and spears,

delighting in bearing the Mashrafi sword and the cup.

Dawn reminds me of him as it takes on color:

beauty of aspect amid wafting, fragrant breaths.

And his hair and his brow appear to my eye

whenever you spill ink across a sheet of paper.

He unleashed a raid of agonizing longing

upon the ruined dwellings of my fair patience.

So I layered on armor of sickness's linked mail,

and galloped on steeds of ruddy tears.

God be with you—refreshment that left me thirsty,

and a hope from which I reaped only despair,

and an auspicious moon whose light I sought,

so it set my entrails ablaze and sent my breaths rising.

Whenever you level your gaze at me with a frown,

I say to a heart lost among my companions:

O Abd Shams, have you the strength today

to withstand the onslaught of al-Saffah, of the house of Abbas?

I plunged into the terror of passion with a soul

that feigned blindness and could not tell bliss from distress.

The cheek's fire kindles the fire within my breast,

and the whisper of jewelry toys with my troubled thoughts.

So, heart, be patient in love and seek divine reward:

to whom can you complain of illness, when the one who sickens you is the healer?

And one with dew-damp flanks trailed her skirts,

over a faint remnant of the pitch-dark night.

So it opened hillside narcissi as its eyes,

and pricked up leek leaves as its ears.

By your life, I do not know; reason may falter

when plain truth is entangled in ambiguity:

is that a north wind, or wine passed round

to every swaying branch in the garden?

It has surely shaken my composure; never have I seen a breeze

whose gusts made a firmly rooted mountain quake.

May God preserve the sands of the sanctuary, home of my youthful passion,

and my companions' spring abode, and the haunt of my solace.

For union there was only a scant refreshment,

    like a frightened man's sip and a snatcher's plunder.

And they said, “You have grown used to life after parting from us.”

So I gathered my sleeves over my head in shame.

Trust in my fidelity as long as my limbs bear me up,

and in my keeping of my pledges as long as my awareness remains intact.

And do not excuse me if I forget your covenants,

even if God has lifted blame from humankind.

My heart is rich in fidelity, though sometimes

a certificate of bankruptcy is recorded against my patience.

God help me with a throbbing, tormented heart,

which sees no harm in dying for love.

The daughters of thought circle round its wick,

as wandering moths cluster round a lamp.

I entrust my affairs in love to the All-Merciful,

and fasten my hand to ropes from His sanctuary.

And I hope for God's kindness in it, for He

is most faithful to a covenant and most exact with the scales.
