ووجْهٍand a face غرَسْتُI planted الوَرْدَthe roses فيهِin it بنَظْرَةٍwith a glance
فياso, oh لَيْتَif only كفّيmy palm مُتِّعَتْwere granted enjoyment بجَنَىwith the fruit of غرْسيmy planting
And a face in which I planted roses with a glance—
Oh, if only my palm could enjoy the fruit of my planting!
كأنّas though احْمِرارَthe redness of الخدِّthe cheek تحْتَbeneath عِذارِهِhis downy beard
عَلامَةُthe signature of موْلاناour lord علَىupon أحْمَرِred الطِّرْسِthe parchment
As though the cheek’s redness beneath his downy beard
Were our lord’s signature upon red parchment.
وبَيْنهُماand between the two فيin باطِنِthe inner reality of الأمْرِthe matter نسْبَةٌa kinship
لذلِكَfor that reason أمْضَيْتُI made binding الغَرامَardent love علَىupon نفْسيmyself
And between the two, beneath the surface, lies a kinship;
Thus I made ardent love binding upon myself.
