O star of ill omen, near at hand across the ages!
That tail has brought war and ruin.
لَمَّاwhen رَأَيْنَاكَwe saw you حَقَّقْنَاwe confirmed الَّذِيwhat وَصَفُواthey described

To people—calamities recorded in the books—

As the poet of Ṭayyiʾ said in his ode—
He, an authority in learning and in letters:
وَخَوَّفُواand they frightened النَّاسَthe people مِنْwith دَهْيَاءَdark دَاهِيَةٍa calamity

“And they frightened the people with a dark calamity,
Should the western star with a tail appear.”
