فهْوَ عِندي لمْ يعُدْ حدَّ الفُتوّهْ
Everyone striving toward a hoped-for goal
Every person heading towards a hoped for goal
has not, in my view, overstepped the bounds of chivalry.
Is in my eyes no longer bound by childish ways
واراكَand I see you اقْتحمْتَyou plunged into ليْلاًa night بَهيماًpitch-black

مُولِجاً منْكَ ناقَةً في كُوّهْ
And I see that you plunged into a pitch-black night,
I saw you break in violently one night, oh beast
inserting a she-camel of yours into a wall-opening.
Leading in your camel into its resting place

إذْ نظَرْنا عَروسُكَ المَجْلوَّهْ
Neither imitation nor invention did she show us—
We saw nothing original, nothing invented
your unveiled bride, when we looked.
When we saw your overly adorned bride

سُ مَقالاً آياتُهُ مَتْلُوّهْ
Everything you said has already been said by the people,
All you have said is what people have already spoken
in a discourse whose verses are recited.
Its verses so often recited and intoned

الإعْرابِ في كلِّ لفْظَةٍ مَقْروّهْ
You added nothing, save that you threw open the protected ground
You’ve added nothing except to explicate
of grammatical inflection in every word read.
The grammar in each carefully pronounced word

لَ الى حِشْمَةٍ تَحوطُ المُرُوّهْ
So ask God for a thought that binds the mind
So ask God for an idea to compel the mind
to modesty that safeguards manly honor.
To a seemliness that would shroud the nude

ثمّ لمْ تأخُذِ الكِتابَ بقُوّهْ
And it pains me that you were Yahya,
And it pains me that you were Yahya
yet did not take the Book with strength.
Yet did not firmly grasp the book, the Quran
