    رأيْتُ ذلِكَ منْ أوْلَى المُهِمّاتِ

    I have willingly visited your grave at Aghmat;

    I deemed that among the foremost duties.

    Why should I not visit you, O most openhanded of kings,

    And O lamp of the pitch-dark nights?

    And you are one whom, had Time deferred your death

    Until my lifetime, my verses would have fittingly praised.

    فتَنْتَمِيهِ حَفِيّاتُ التّحِيّاتِ

    Your grave stands high amid hills that set it apart;

    So heartfelt greetings seek it out.

    فأنْتَ سلْطانُ أحياءٍ وأمْواتِ

    You were noble in life and death, and renowned for greatness;

    Thus you are the sultan of the living and the dead.

    Your like was never seen in the past, and I believe

    That none will ever be seen, now or in time to come.
