قَدْindeed قَبِلْنَاwe accepted جِيَادَكَyour fine steeds الدُّهْمَthe black ones لَمَّاwhen
أَنْthat بَلَونَاwe tested مِنْهَاamong them الْعِتَاقَthe thoroughbreds الْحِسَانَاthe handsome ones
Indeed, we accepted your black steeds when
we had tested the handsome thoroughbreds among them.
أَقْبَلَتْthey came خَلْفَbehind كُلِّeach حِجْرٍmare تَبِيعٍa following foal
خَلَعتْshe bestowed وَصْفَهَاher likeness عَلَيْهِupon him عِيَانَاvisibly
They came, a foal following behind each mare,
each visibly bestowing her own likeness upon him.
فَعُنِينَاso we took care بِرَعْيِهَاof their grazing وَفَسَحْنَاand we opened up
فِيin رُبُوعِthe lands الْعِدَىof foes لَهَاfor them مَيْدَانَاa field
So we saw to their grazing, and opened
a field for them in the lands of foes.
وَأرَدْنَاand we wished امْتِطَاءَهَاto mount them فَاتَّخَذْنَاso we fashioned
مِنْfrom شِرَاكِthongs الأَدِيمof leather فِيهَاfor them عِنَانَاa rein
We wished to mount them, so we fashioned
reins for them from leather thongs.
قَدِمَتْit arrived قَبْلَهَاbefore them كَتِبَةُa troop سِحْرٍof enchantment
مِنْfrom كِتَابِa letter سَبَتْit took captive بِهِwith it الأَذْهَانَاminds
A troop of enchantment arrived before them,
in a letter with which it took minds captive,
مِثْلَمَاjust as تجْنُبُlead alongside الْجُيُوشُarmies الْمَذّاكِيfull-grown steeds
عُدَّةًas preparation لِلِقَاءٍfor an encounter مَهْمَاwhatever كَانَاit may be
just as armies lead full-grown steeds alongside them,
in readiness for an encounter, whatever it may be.
لَمْdid not يَرُقْplease مُقْلَتِيmy eye وَلاَnor رَاقَdelight قَلْبِيmy heart
كَعُلاَهَاlike its loftiness بَرَاعَةًin artistry وَبَيَانَاand in eloquence
Nothing has charmed my eye or delighted my heart
like its lofty artistry and eloquence.
مَنْwhoever يَكُنْmay be مُهْدياًa gift-giver فَمِثْلُكَthen one like you يُهْدِيgives gifts
لَمْdid not أَجِدْI find لِلثَّنَاfor praise عَلَيْكَof you لِسَانَاa tongue
Whoever would give gifts should give as you do.
I have found no tongue with which to praise you.
