سِهَامُthe arrows of الْمَنَايَاdeath لاَnot تَطِيشُfly wide وَلاَnor تُخْطِىmiss
وَلِلدَّهْرِand Time has كَفُّa hand يَسْتَرِدُّtakes back الَّذيwhat يُعْطِيit gives
The arrows of death neither fly wide nor miss.
And Time has a hand that takes back what it gives.
وَإِنَّاand indeed we وَإِنْand though كُنَّاwe are عَلَىupon ثَبجِthe midst of الدُّنَاthis world
فَلاَبُدَّso it is inevitable يَوْماًone day أَنْthat نَحُلَّwe alight عَلَىupon الشَّطِّthe shore
And we, though on the high seas of this world,
must one day come ashore.
وَسِيَّانِand equal are ذُلُّthe humiliation of الْفَقْرِpoverty أَوْor عِزَّةُthe honor of الْغِنَىwealth
ومَنْand whoever أَسْرَعَhastens السَّيْرَthe pace الْحَثِيثَswift وَمَنْand whoever يُبْطِيgoes slowly
And poverty's humiliation and wealth's honor are alike,
as are those who press on at a swift pace and those who go slowly.
تَسَاوَىare equal عَلَىat وِرْدِthe watering place of الرَّدَىdeath كُلُّevery وَارِدٍone who comes to water
فَلَمْso did not يُغْنِavail رَبُّthe master of السَّيْفِthe sword عَنْfor رَبَّةِthe mistress of الْقُرْطِthe earring
At death's watering place, all who arrive are equal;
so the sword's master could not save the earring's mistress.
