أَقُولُI say لِعَاذِلِيto my reproacher لَمَّاwhen نَهَانِيhe forbade me
وَقَدand indeed وَجَدَhe found المَقَالةthe occasion to speak إِذْwhen جَفَانِيhe shunned me
I say to my reproacher, when he bade me desist,
And had found cause to speak when my beloved shunned me:
عَلِمْتَyou knew بِأَنَّهُthat he مُرَّbitter التَّجَنِّيunjust treatment
وَفَاتَكَand it escaped you أَنَّهُthat he حُلْوُsweet اللِّسَانِthe tongue
You knew that he was bitter in his unjust treatment,
But overlooked that he was sweet of tongue.
