فياso, oh لَيْتَwould that شِعْريmy knowing بعْدَهُمْafter them كيفَhow أصْنَعُI shall act
They planned a journey away from me this morning and resolved to go.
Ah, would that I knew what to do after they are gone!
وياand O لائِمِيmy reproacher أكْثَرْتَyou have been excessive فيin اللّوْمِreproach فاتّئِدْso be gentle
فهَذِيfor these رُقىًhealing incantations فيfor علّتيmy illness ليْسَdo not تَنْفَعُhelp
And, O my reproacher, you have reproached too much; be gentle.
For these are incantations that do no good for my malady.
لغَيْرِto other than جُفونيmy eyelids قُلْsay إذاif كُنْتَyou are قائِلاًspeaking
سَحابةُa cloud صيْفٍof summer عنْafter قَريبٍa short while تقَشّعُdisperses
Say to eyelids other than mine, if you must speak:
"A summer cloud will soon disperse."
وماand what لِيَails me لاnot أبْكيI weep بعيْنٍwith an eye قَريحَةٍsore
علىover فُرْقَةِseparation from الأحبابِloved ones تهْميit streams وتَهْمَعُand pours tears
And why should I not weep with a sore eye,
over parting from loved ones, streaming and pouring tears?
فؤاديَmy heart أعْيَhas baffled صدْعُهُits fracture كلَّevery جابِرmender
وهلْand has ... ever جُبِرَتْbeen mended ياقوتَةٌa ruby تتصدّعُthat cracks
The fracture in my heart has baffled every mender;
and can a ruby be mended once it cracks?
لَضَيّعْتُI indeed squandered قَلْبيmy heart ثمّthen أصْبَحْتُI became ناشِداًa seeker
وقدْand indeed قِيلَit has been said أوْلَىmost deserving بالخَسارِof loss المُضَيِّعُthe squanderer
I indeed squandered my heart, then began to seek it;
and it has been said: the squanderer most deserves the loss.
أبوحُI speak openly بماof what أُخْفيI conceal وليْسَand it is not بنافِعيof use to me
ولكِنّهاbut it is شَكْوَىa complaint الىto اللّهِGod تُرْفَعُis raised
I reveal what I conceal, though it does me no good;
but it is a complaint raised to God.
أمالِكَO master of رِقّيmy bondage كمْhow often أرانيَI see myself فيin الهَوَىlove
أذِلُّI am abased كَماas شاءَwilled الغَرامُpassion وأخْضَعُand I submit
O master of my bondage, how often in love I find myself
abased as passion wills, and yielding.
وهَبْand suppose أنّنيthat I أذْنَبْتُhave sinned والعَبْدُand the slave مُذْنِبٌis sinful

And grant that I have sinned—a slave is sinful—
yet I have good deeds that intercede for my sins.

My love is like rose-colored ambergris in its fragrance:
when harshness burns it, it gives off perfume.
ورأيُكَand your decision بيْنَbetween الحِلْمِforbearance والحُكْمِand judgment واقِفٌis poised
علىnotwithstanding أنّthat بابَthe gate of الحِلْمِforbearance عندَكَwith you أوْسَعُis wider
And your decision is poised between forbearance and judgment,
though with you the gate of forbearance is wider.

هوَHe اللهُGod يُعْطيgives ماwhat يَشاءُHe wills ويمْنَعُand withholds
Shall I reproach my fate, or desist? For it is only
God who gives what He wills and withholds.

I entrust my affairs in this world to One who knows,
whose sight and hearing encompass my affairs.
سأرْفَعُI shall submit أمْريmy case للخَليفةِto the caliph يوسُفٍYusuf
فيَحْكُمُthen he will judge بالحَقِّby the truth المُبينِmanifest ويَصْدَعُand proclaim openly
I shall submit my case to the caliph Yusuf,
then he will judge by manifest truth and proclaim it openly.

A blazing star of guidance whose light dispels the gloom,
and an ocean of generosity whose waves surge forth.

And, praise be to God, what rain, what a lion, what a stronghold
for whoever seeks bounty, or attacks, or is frightened!

And a record of glory, handed down time and again,
fresh in its meanings, narrated and heard from him.

لحَرْبٍfor war فقُلْthen say أيُّwhich الحُسامَيْنِof the two swords أقْطَعُkeener
When his counsels and his swords are unsheathed
for war, then say: which of the two swords is keener?

And if his resolves stand firm amid a crisis,
then Islam is safe from what is feared.
سبَقْتَyou have outstripped كماas اسْتَوْلىgained mastery الجَوادُthe noble steed علَىover المَدىthe course

You have outstripped all, as a noble steed conquers the course,
so no front-runner hopes to match the reach of your glory.
وأنْتَand you are حُسامُthe sword of المُلْكِthe realm ناصِرُهُits champion الذيwho

And you are the realm's sword, its champion, who
drives enemies from both its flanks and defends it.

And one like you is looked to for acceptance and favor,
and with you, too, there is room for kindness.
