خَليلِيmy dear friend إنif اشْتَقْتَنيyou longed for me مرّةًonce
خَليلِي إن اشْتَقْتَني مرّةً
تَشوَّقَكَhas yearned for you القلْبُthe heart منّيof mine مِراراtime and again
تَشوَّقَكَ القلْبُ منّي مِرارا
My dear friend, if you have longed for me once,
My heart has longed for you time and again.
وماand not زِلْتُI have ceased أصْفيكَI offer you sincerely محْضَpure الوِدادِaffection
وما زِلْتُ أصْفيكَ محْضَ الوِدادِ
وأمْنَحُكَand I grant you الحُبَّlove بحْتاًunalloyed نُضاراpure gold
وأمْنَحُكَ الحُبَّ بحْتاً نُضارا
I have never ceased to offer you pure affection,
And grant you love—unalloyed, pure gold.
جعلْتُكَI made you فيin حادِثِthe calamity of الدّهْرِtime سُوراًa rampart
جعلْتُكَ في حادِثِ الدّهْرِ سُوراً
وفيand on معْصَمِthe wrist of الفخْرِpride منّيof mine سِواراa bracelet
وفي معْصَمِ الفخْرِ منّي سِوارا
I made you a rampart against time's calamities,
And a bracelet on the wrist of my pride.
وأعْدَدْتُand I laid up وُدَّكَyour love كَنْزاًa treasure عَتيداًready at hand
وأعْدَدْتُ وُدَّكَ كَنْزاً عَتيداً
أقَمْتُI raised الوَفاءَloyalty علَيْهِaround it جِداراa wall
أقَمْتُ الوَفاءَ علَيْهِ جِدارا
And I laid up your love as a treasure ready at hand;
I raised a wall of loyalty around it.
لعَمْرُكَby your life لوif حِيزَwere secured ليfor me مُلْكُthe kingdom of كِسْرىKisra
لعَمْرُكَ لو حِيزَ لي مُلْكُ كِسْرى
وخاقانَand Khaqan ذيpossessor of التّاجِthe crown أوor مُلْكُthe kingdom of داراDara
وخاقانَ ذي التّاجِ أو مُلْكُ دارا
By your life, were I granted Kisra's kingdom,
And the crowned Khaqan's, or Dara's kingdom,
وخُيِّرتُand were I given a choice فيconcerning ودِّكَyour love المُرْتَضىcherished
وخُيِّرتُ في ودِّكَ المُرْتَضى
وفيهِand concerning it لَمِلْتُI would surely incline إليْكَtoward you اخْتِياراby choice
وفيهِ لَمِلْتُ إليْكَ اخْتِيارا
And given a choice between your cherished love
And that kingdom, I would freely choose you.
نسَبْتَyou ascribed ليَto me الذّنْبَthe fault ظُلْماًunjustly ولوْand even if
نسَبْتَ ليَ الذّنْبَ ظُلْماً ولوْ
جنَيْتُI had sinned لأمّلْتُI would have hoped منْكَfrom you اغْتِفاراforgiveness
جنَيْتُ لأمّلْتُ منْكَ اغْتِفارا
You laid the blame on me unjustly; yet even if
I had sinned, I would have hoped for your forgiveness.
فمِثْلُكَfor one like you مَنْone who يعْثُرُstumbles الخِلُّthe friend يوْماًone day
فمِثْلُكَ مَنْ يعْثُرُ الخِلُّ يوْماً
فيُغْضيthen overlooks لهُfor him ويُقيلُand pardons العِثاراthe stumble
فيُغْضي لهُ ويُقيلُ العِثارا
For one like you, when a friend stumbles one day,
Overlooks it for him and pardons the lapse.
فكيْفَthen how وكيفَand how ولاand no ذنْبَfault ليof mine
فكيْفَ وكيفَ ولا ذنْبَ لي
سوىexcept الودِّlove مهْماhowever often أعَدْتَyou repeat اعْتِباراexamination
سوى الودِّ مهْما أعَدْتَ اعْتِبارا
How then—how—when I have no fault
But love, however often you reconsider?
فَماso what لكَis with you عوفِيتَmay you be kept well تُرْضيyou please العِداthe foes
فَما لكَ عوفِيتَ تُرْضي العِدا
وتولِيand you bestow البِعادَestrangement وتُبْديand you show النِّفاراaversion
وتولِي البِعادَ وتُبْدي النِّفارا
What ails you—may you be kept well—that you please the foes
And inflict estrangement and show aversion?
تَوارَيْتَyou hid yourself عنْfrom ناظِريmy sight ظاهِراoutwardly
تَوارَيْتَ عنْ ناظِري ظاهِرا
وشخْصُكَand your form فيin الفِكْرِthought ماnot إنْat all (emphatic) تَوارَىhas vanished
وشخْصُكَ في الفِكْرِ ما إنْ تَوارَى
Outwardly, you have hidden from my sight,
Yet your form has never vanished from my thoughts.
وأحْلَلْتَنيand you lodged me للأمانِfor safety حِمىًa sanctuary
وأحْلَلْتَني للأمانِ حِمىً
رَمَيْتُI cast بِهاthrough it منْfrom فؤاديmy heart الجِماراthe embers
رَمَيْتُ بِها منْ فؤادي الجِمارا
And you lodged me in a sanctuary of safety;
Through it I cast the embers from my heart.
فمُنَّso graciously grant بعُتْباكَwith your renewed favor بعْدَafter العِتابِreproach
فمُنَّ بعُتْباكَ بعْدَ العِتابِ
فكُنْتُfor I had been أؤمِّلُhoping for عنْكَapart from you اصْطِباراpatient endurance
فكُنْتُ أؤمِّلُ عنْكَ اصْطِبارا
So grant me your renewed favor after reproach,
For I had hoped to endure being apart from you.
