A stranger has called to you from the farthest of the two Maghribs,

yet you are near, though far away to visit.

Confident in the bonds of hope, his gaze

is lowered under modesty's sway, uneasy.

He charges the full moon's disk to carry a greeting

when it sinks, and the sun when it sets,

so it may return from those landmarks at dawn,

with the fragrance of the answering greeting spread abroad.

He entrusts the north wind with intimacies

of love, unknown to any watcher.

He seeks their answer in the south wind's bosom

when it appears, with dawn led alongside.

He questions the Fertile Hand, while his tears

are dyed, from longing, with henna of fresh blood.

He follows the tracks of the mounts, bidding farewell,

while the camel-driver chants and a noble camel moans.

When hoofprints appear as prayer niches,

he falls upon them, bowing and turning in devotion.

He meets the pilgrimage mounts, worn out

and spent, while a discerning man has answered the call.

No words remain but moaning and pain,

no strength but a sigh and sobbing.

    عَلِيلٌ وَلِكَنْ مِنْ رَضَاكَ طَبيِبُ

    Parched, yet in your acceptance lies a watering place;

ailing, yet in your favor lies a healer.

Ah, would I knew—though wishes are delusion,

and hopes may miss, then hit their mark—

will Najd offer aid after being so far beyond reach,

and will a dune there mourn after such separation?

Will my debts be paid after time has delayed,

and will my sale go through, though the merchandise is flawed?

May I claim my due from time, and have it yield willingly,

and call aloud for my share, and have it answer?

Ah, would I knew: is there a watering place for my circling

with you, and have I a share in your favor?

But you are the generous master, and whoever takes his protection,

whatever his condition, is never disappointed.

How could patience ever fail toward a petitioner,

when that refuge's precinct is so spacious?

Nothing stirred me but a lightning flash,

whose gray hair gleams at the temple of night.

It brought to mind the Hijaz caravan and neighbors

whom a caller urged toward the beloved.

So I passed the night, my eyelid with its tear-pearls

richly laden, my patience stolen away by sorrows.

Memory sways me, and yearning tosses me,

as a tender bough leans in the gardens.

I summon consolation for my longing through wishes,

then overpowering passion visits, and I lose myself.

My aim, were I granted my wishes, is a visit

at which love and the heart's throbbing may be confided.

So, the words of Habib, when he says in longing:

“May a beloved homeland draw near to me.”

I marveled at my sword, though it lay beside ghada-fire

in my heart, yet no heat from it had melted it.

I marvel that the lance in my hand does not sprout leaves,

while the rain of my tear-ducts pours down upon it.

O trees of that encampment, if the rain should fail,

a torrent of falling tears would suffice you.

O you leaving the barren country, linger,

for my rain keeps both sides moist and fertile.

O striker of the stingy fire-stick, go gently

with yourself: my Kharijite longing is Shabib.

O Seal of the Messengers, whose rank is firmly established,

this exile's tale concerning you is strange.

A heart turned over on the coals of separation,

over which a well of tears is emptied:

by God, it only blazes all the more!

Have you seen water from which a flame arose?

Its night is that of one venom-stricken, and its day,

when longing's headband is bound tight, is grievous.

My love for you is guidance; I followed its light,

and my affiliation with the Companions is kinship with you.

It is honor enough that I belong to your Companions

and am kin to the noble Khazrajites.

From your secure abodes I have been kept by the enemy's

scorpions, whose creeping cannot be hidden,

eager to extinguish a light you kindled.

In its defense, some are despoiled and others stripped bare.

How many a martyr seeking your favor lies felled,

shaded by a vulture and mourned by a wolf!

Unscented winds pass over their wounds,

and grow fragrant and sweet from the wounds' breath.

    وَهَلْ يَتَسَاوَى مَشْهَدٌ وَمَغِيبُ

    Striving for your victory keeps us from you—no favor claimed;

can presence and absence be equal?

If a share of your favor is assured, wishes yield,

and an arrow's range stretches far, yet it strikes true.

Without you, the Romans' wood would never have been tested,

for the foreign cross's wood is hard.

    Circumstances had almost—save for blessings

you guaranteed, and a promise of triumph—sown doubt.

Then all the mighty victory and blessings you could wish for:

the Rewarder has granted them to the believers.

Pulpits of glory, above which victory called to prayer,

and an orator spoke eloquently for the keen-edged sword.

We lead into its battle every neighing steed,

like a dark-eyed creature startled by something creeping.

We don coats of armor woven from certainty's linked mail,

fashioned by Him who chooses and brings back.

When the Khatti spear quivers above their pool,

a deep pool and a bough in them delight you.

So grant pardon and forbearance, and do not forget one crying out,

invoking your might, hoping someone will answer.

And after God, we place our hope in your standing; indeed, it is

a generous share, rich in fulfillment.

God's blessing be upon you as long as the air is sweetened

by one who lavishes lengthy, fragrant praise upon you,

and as long as a swaying form makes the branches reel,

and as long as a cool, bright-toothed mouth smiles upon the lightning.
