I saw that the gifts of earth were beneath you in worth.

So I gave you knowledge of exalted worth:

Choice selections from accounts and literature whose

    Path breathed fragrance and whose blossom ripened;

And pearls of praise I selected from your eminence.

And how strange that the sea should be given its own pearls!

They experienced the world's nature in ease and hardship,

And time's sweetness and bitterness put them to the test.

So none of them found terror too much to bear,

Nor did anyone's patience fail in adversity.

And they upheld God's command; if death struck,

God's support and His aid encompassed them.

So take from their accounts every delightful tale,

Whose recounting delights in repetition and revisiting.

And how many a marvel and rarity I have included,

With which its breast is adorned in the royal assembly.

A gift from one whose reliance is on you alone,

And the service of a servant whose heart is devoted to you.

And I named it, after seeking approval

For it, “The Marvel of the Age”—the age whose pride lies in you.

And I, though I have spoken of you at length, surely fall short.

And whoever has done his utmost—his excuse is plain.
