أَفَادَتْbrought وِجْهَتِيmy journey بِنَدَاكَthrough your bounty مَالاًwealth
قَضَىpaid off دَيْنِيmy debt وَأَصْلَحَand put right بَعْضَsome of حَالِيmy condition
My journey, through your bounty, brought me wealth
that paid my debt and set some of my affairs right.
وَمَتَّعْتُand I delighted الْخَوَاطِرَthe thoughts بِانْشِرَاحٍwith gladness
وَأَطْرَفْتُand I treated النَّوَاظِرَthe eyes بِاكْتِحَالِto kohl adornment
And I delighted my thoughts with gladness,
and treated my eyes to kohl.
وَأُبْتُand I returned خَفِيفَlight ظَهْرٍof back وَالْمَطَايَاwhile the mounts
بِجَاهِكِthanks to your standing تَشْتَكِيcomplain of ثِقَلَthe weight of الرِّحَالِthe saddle-packs
And I returned light of back, while the mounts,
thanks to your standing, complain of the weight of their saddle-packs.
وَشَأْنِيand my state لِلْمَعَالِمِto the landmarks غَيْرُother than شَانِيmy former state
وَحَالِيand my state بالْمَكَارِمِwith generous deeds جِدُّtruly حَالِيadorned
And before the landmarks, my state is not what it was,
and my state is truly adorned with generous deeds.
فَحُبُّfor love of عُلاَكَyour eminence إيمَانِيmy faith وَعَقْدِيand my conviction
وَشُكْرُand gratitude for نَدَاكَyour bounty دِينِيmy religion وَانْتِحَالِيand my professed creed
For love of your eminence is my faith and conviction,
and gratitude for your bounty is my religion and professed creed.
كَأَنْas though قَدْindeed صَحَّproved sincere لِلَّهِto God انْقِطَاعِيmy exclusive devotion
بِتَأمِيلِيthrough my hope in جَنَابَكyour noble presence وَارْتِحَالِيand my journey
As though my devotion to God had proved sincere
through my hope in your noble presence and my journey.
وَمَاand nothing يَبْقَىendures سِوَىexcept فِعْلٍa deed جَمِيلٍbeautiful
وَحَالُand the state of الدَّهْرِtime لاَnot تَبْقَىremains بِحَالِin one state
And nothing endures but a noble deed,
and time's state never stays the same.
وَكُلُّand every بِدَايَةٍbeginning فَإِلَىthen toward انْتِهَاءٍan end
وَكُلُّand every إِقَامَةٍstay فَإِلَىthen toward ارْتِحَالِdeparture
And every beginning leads to an end,
and every stay leads to departure.
وَمَنْand whoever سَامَasks of الْزَّمَانَtime دَوَامَthe permanence of أَمْرٍa thing
فَقَدْthen indeed وَقَفَhas fixed الرَّجَاءَhope عَلَىupon الْمُحَالِthe impossible
And whoever asks time for anything's permanence
has indeed pinned his hope upon the impossible.
