دُنْيَاworld خَدَعْتِyou deceived الَّذِيthe one whom سَفَرْتِyou unveiled لَهُfor him
عَنْfrom صَفْحَةِa face لَمْdid not يَجُلْpass بِهَاover it كَرَمُgenerosity
O world, you deceived the one for whom you unveiled
a face over which no generosity ever passed.
سَرَقْتِyou stole حَظَّthe share الإِلَهِof God مِنْfrom يَدِهِhis hand
فَهَانَso became worthless مَاwhat كَانَhad been مِنْكَof you يُحْتَرَمُheld in esteem
You stole God's share from his hand,
so what had been revered in you became worthless.
مَاذَاwhat الَّذِيthat which نَالَhe gained مِنْكِfrom you لَيْسَis not لَهُfor it
مُنْقَطعan ending دَائِمٌpermanent وَمُنْصَرَمُand a cessation
What has he gained from you that does not have
a permanent ending and a cessation?
وَهَبْهُand suppose that he نَالَhe gained الَّذِيwhat أَرَادَhe desired أَمَاare not
بَيْنَbetween يَدَيْهِhis two hands الْمَشِيبُgray hair وَالْهَرَمُand decrepitude
And suppose he gained what he desired—are not
gray hair and decrepitude before him?
