Oh, would that I knew whether they might return

one day—and with God lies knowledge of the unseen—

those hours of delight beneath the shade of youth,

    green-fringed, with sweet-blowing breezes.

Days when we feared no blow of separation,

for we were safe from its assault.

My caravan was mighty in the face of time,

and our company was strung together like pearls.

Until, when the cups of love grew sweet,

and I said, “The eyes of time have fallen asleep,”

events came that had not been foreseen

by me; the colors of the nights are manifold.

Who, then, will bring me an answer today?

Leave me to question the east wind and the south wind.

May God not burden tender souls

with more of longing's anguish than they can bear.

The taste of separation, my friend, is bitter,

and thought's fire is the agony of burning.

    فهَلْ الى نيْلِ الرِّضى منْ طَريقْ

    Estrangement has brought my soul to my collarbones;

so is there any path to winning favor?

By God, estrangement is nothing but torment.

Oh, how grievous is what hearts bear of it!

The day is as long as the Day of Reckoning,

and at night no star ever sets.

    Perhaps the mighty king's pardon

will check time's tyranny, however insolent it has grown.

How long, at its treacherous reversals,

must I cry out in complaint—how long?

Abu al-Hajjaj suffices me as a champion,

gathering what was scattered of my company.

For humankind he is the surest shield,

if one day the seas of war surge.

And he is, for the realm of lofty standing,

a secure stronghold against the onset of calamities.

A king whose neighbor is secure, lofty in glory,

whose pardon is hoped for by whoever has sinned.

In his character and in his outward appearance,

he is the full moon, the sun, and the garden of the hills.

He is like a sword of exquisite adornment,

gleaming with the luster of good cheer, keen of edge.

    تُجْلَى بمرْآهُ الكَريمِ الكُروبْ

    He is from the great tree of glory, pure at its core;

sorrows are dispelled at his noble appearance.

like rain, or like a lion as it springs.

My lord, she has come to you seeking favor,

and asking pardon for herself and acceptance,

    ومُلْكُكَ البَرُّ العَطوفُ الوَصولْ

    and asking that what has passed be overlooked;

and your rule is kind, compassionate, generous.

Estrangement like ghada embers has left her restless,

and reproach has worn her thin, so she came saying:

ʿAbd Allah, enough of this reproach from you!

If indeed I have sinned, you see that I repent.

    والتّوْبُ يمْحو يا حَبيبي الذّنوبْ

    Yesterday the little servant sinned, and today he has repented;

and repentance, my beloved, wipes away sins.
