وسائِلَةٍand a woman asking عنِabout الحسَنِal-Hasan بنِson of يحْيَىYahya
وقدْwhile already جرَحَتْhad wounded مآقِيهاthe corners of her eyes الدّموعُthe tears
And a woman asking after al-Hasan ibn Yahya,
while tears had wounded the corners of her eyes,
تَقولُshe says ترحّلhas departed المِفضالُthe generous man عنّاfrom us
وضِعْناand we are lost بعْدَهُafter him فمتَىso when الرّجوعُthe return
says, “The generous man has departed from us,
and we are lost without him—when will he return?
وكانَand he was الشّمْسَthe sun فارَقَناleft us سَناهُhis radiance
فأظْلَمَتِso grew dark المَعاهِدُthe familiar haunts والرّبوعُand the dwellings
He was the sun; his radiance has left us,
so the familiar haunts and dwellings have grown dark.
تولّىmay He protect اللهُGod منْهُin him خيْرَthe best والِيgovernor
تُكَفُّare warded off بهِthrough him الخُطوبُthe calamities فَماso not تَروعُthey terrify
May God protect him, the best of governors,
through whom calamities are warded off and cause no fear.”
فقُلْتُso I said كأنْas though بمَقْدَمِهِat his arrival فقالَتْand she said
بِشارَتُكyour reward for glad tidings الصّواهِلُthe neighing steeds والنّجوعُand the nomad encampments
So I said, “It is as though he were already here!” And she said,
“Your reward for these tidings: neighing steeds and nomad encampments!”
فقُلْتُso I said لعلّهاperhaps she انْفَرَدَتْwas alone بهَذاin this
فَقالَthen spoke بقَوْلِهاin her words الحَيُّthe community الجَميعُall of it
So I said, “Perhaps she alone says this,”
but the whole community echoed her words.
فكانتthus it was دَعْوَةٌa prayer صعِدَتْthat rose ونَجْوَىand a whispered plea
تقبّلَهاHe accepted it المُجيبُthe Answerer لَهاto it السّميعُthe All-Hearing
Thus a prayer rose up, a whispered plea,
which the All-Hearing, who answers prayer, accepted.
ووافَقَand accorded with ماwhat نطَقَتْshe uttered بهِwith it قَضاءٌa decree
قَضىit decreed أنّthat الوَسائِلَthe entreaties لاnot تَضيعُgo to waste
And a decree accorded with what she uttered,
decreeing that entreaties do not go to waste.
