أرِقْتُI lay sleepless فجُنْحُand the darkness of اللّيلِthe night قُيِّدَwas fettered خَطْوُهُits step
فلَهْفيso, my anguish علىfor الجَفْنِthe eyelid القَريحِsore المُسَهَّدِkept sleepless
I lay sleepless, and the darkness of night had its steps fettered.
So alas for my sore, sleepless eyelid!
وماand not بُليَتْwas afflicted نفْسُthe soul of امْرئٍa man متطرِّفٍfar from home
بأوْحَشَwith anything more dreadful منْthan عَبْدٍa slave عَبوسٍscowling مُقَيَّدِshackled
And no soul of a man far from home has ever been afflicted
with anything more dreadful than a scowling, shackled slave.
