If you deny what my ribs conceal

of burning passion, ask the witnesses—my tears.

After you left, I made my stand at al-Muhassab,

calling upon forgetfulness, which cannot hear.

Ah, for those days at the bend of the sanctuary,

the home of joy and my gathered company.

They asked: When did those depart who left behind

the fire of longing in your shattered heart?

I answered: They saddled the riding camels late at night

and bore the moons away in a watch of night.

They traveled by night: sleep became the month of Muharram,

and my eyelids' showers the month of Rabi.

What a guardian they charged with keeping the pledge!

And they entrusted the secrets to one who would not divulge them.

So whenever I inclined toward forgetfulness for solace,

acquired habit overcame my innate disposition.

O you who clothe me in sickness's robe and leave me

between burning thirst and the heat within my ribs,

Treat me with your accustomed kindness and

mercy; do not regard my ill conduct.

And turn tenderly toward me; bestow the slightest gift:

in my contentment, a little from you becomes much.

When you slept, you awakened my dormant sigh,

and denied my eyelids sweet slumber.

    أبْكيكَ عنْدَ غُروبِها وطُلوعِ

    And I charged my eye to watch al-Faraqid and al-Suha;

I weep for you at their setting and rising.

So the star in heaven's heart is my companion by night,

and sickness is my bedfellow as I toss upon the bed.

Distraught with love for you, I cast off patience's robe,

and donned the robe of my coquetry and submission.

Ask the grammar of my flowing tears or my sigh:

it will bring you the lowered and the raised.

Ask it about my passion; it will answer at once:

This is an analogy that cannot be overturned.

You tormented me and surrendered my body to wasting sickness,

and denied me what is not forbidden.

If my sin is that I am enamored of you,

passion-stricken at heart—then this is no time to turn back.
