لَمْnot أعُدَّI counted الحُسامَthe sharp sword منْamong أدَواتِيmy tools
حَسْبُenough for نَفسيmyself يَراعَتيmy reed pen ودَواتِيand my inkwell
I did not count the sword among my tools;
my reed pen and inkwell were enough for me.
فأَناso I اليَوْمَtoday تَجْمَعُbrings together السّيْفَthe sword كَفّيmy hand
ويَراعَand the reed pen الكُتّابِof the scribes بعْدَafter شَتاتِيmy dispersal
So today my hand brings together the sword
and the scribes’ reed pen, after my dispersal.

أنَاI عَبْدٌa servant أقامَset upright مَوْلايَmy master شَكْليmy form
لمْnot أكُنْI was أسْتَحِقُّI deserved شَيئاًanything بِذاتيin my own right
I am a servant; my master set my form upright.
I deserved nothing in my own right.

And likewise, humankind is made of dust, yet
God breathed into it the spirit of life.
