دُنْيَاO world خَدَعْتِyou deceived الَّذِيthe one سَفَرْتِyou unveiled لَهُfor him
عَنْfrom صَفْحَةِa face لَمْdid not يَجُلْpass بِهَاacross it كَرَمُgenerosity
O world, you deceived the one for whom you unveiled
A face across which no generosity ever passed.
سَرَقْتِyou stole حَظَّthe share الإِلَهِof God مِنْfrom يَدِهِhis hand
فَهَانَso became worthless مَاwhat كَانَwas مِنْكَof you يُحْتَرَمُheld in honor
You stole God's share from his hand,
So what was once honored in you became worthless.
مَاذَاwhat الَّذِيthat which نَالَhe gained مِنْكِfrom you لَيْسَthere is not لَهُfor it
مُنْقَطعan end دَائِمٌlasting وَمُنْصَرَمُand a passing away
What has he gained from you that has no
Lasting end and passing away?
وَهَبْهُand suppose that he نَالَattained الَّذِيwhat أَرَادَhe desired أَمَاare not
بَيْنَbetween يَدَيْهِhis two hands الْمَشِيبُgray hair وَالْهَرَمُand decrepitude
And suppose he attained what he desired—are not
Gray hair and decrepitude before him?
