وَقَوْرَاءَand a broad, round wheel مِنْfrom قَوْسِthe bow of الْغَمَامِthe clouds ابْتَغُواthey sought لَهَاfor it
وَقَوْرَاءَ مِنْ قَوْسِ الْغَمَامِ ابْتَغُوا لَهَا
مِثَالاًa model أَدَارُوهَاthey set it turning بِلاَwithout شَكِّdoubt
مِثَالاً أَدَارُوهَا بِلاَ شَكِّ
And a broad, round wheel, for which they sought in the rainbow
And of the rainbow from the bow of clouds they sought
A model—they set it turning, beyond a doubt.
An example for it without any doubt
فَبَيْنَso between الثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiades وَالثَّرَىand the earth سُدَّwas wedged جرْمُهَاits bulk
فَبَيْنَ الثُّرَيَّا وَالثَّرَى سُدَّ جرْمُهَا
وَلِلْفَلَكِand to the celestial sphere الدَّوَّارِrevolving قَدْindeed أَصْبَحَتْit has become تَحْكِيit resembles
وَلِلْفَلَكِ الدَّوَّارِ قَدْ أَصْبَحَتْ تَحْكِي
Between the Pleiades and the earth its bulk was wedged,
So between the Pleiades and the ground its mass was blocked
And it has come to resemble the revolving celestial sphere.
And for the revolving sphere it had become relating
تَصُوغُit fashions لُجَيْنَthe silver of الْمَاءِthe water فِيin النَّهْرِthe river دَائِماalways
تَصُوغُ لُجَيْنَ الْمَاءِ فِي النَّهْرِ دَائِما
دَرَاهِمَcoins نَوْرٍblossom قَدْalready خَلصَنْhave emerged مِنْfrom السَّبكِthe casting
دَرَاهِمَ نَوْرٍ قَدْ خَلصَنْ مِنْ السَّبكِ
It ever fashions the silver of the river’s water
It molds the still water in the river constantly
Into blossom-coins that have emerged from the casting.
Pieces of light that were refined from alloy
وَتُرْسِلُand it sends forth مِنْfrom شُهْبَانِهَاits meteors ذَاone with ذُؤابَةٍa lock of hair
وَتُرْسِلُ مِنْ شُهْبَانِهَا ذَا ذُؤابَةٍ
فَتَبْغِيso it seeks اسْتِرَاقَstealing السَّمْعِa hearing عَنْfrom حَوْزَةِthe domain of الْمُلْكِkingship
فَتَبْغِي اسْتِرَاقَ السَّمْعِ عَنْ حَوْزَةِ الْمُلْكِ
And from its meteors it sends forth one with a lock of hair,
And it sends from its meteors that have a tail
So it seeks to steal a hearing from the royal domain.
Trying to stealthily hear from the realm of dominion
تَذَكَّرَتِit remembered الْعَهْدَthe age الَّذِيwhich اخْتُرِعَتْit was invented بِهِin it
تَذَكَّرَتِ الْعَهْدَ الَّذِي اخْتُرِعَتْ بِهِ
وَحَنَّتْand it yearned فَمَاso it does not تَنْفَكُّcease سَاجِعَةًcooing تَبْكِيit weeps
وَحَنَّتْ فَمَا تَنْفَكُّ سَاجِعَةً تَبْكِي
It remembered the age in which it was invented,
It remembered the era in which it was invented
And yearned; so it never ceases cooing as it weeps.
And yearned so it does not cease lamenting crying
