عنْدَما أمّلَ الهُمامُ العَميدُ
My companion said to me, as my renunciation became clear,
My friend said to me, when my indifference was revealed,
when hope was placed in the noble chieftain:
When resolute ambitions grew tired,
لِمَwhy أعْرَضْتَyou turned away واسْتَهَنْتَand made light بهَذاof this
لِمَ أعْرَضْتَ واسْتَهَنْتَ بهَذا

قلتُ أغْناني الغَنيُّ الحَميدُ
“Why have you turned away and made light of this?”
"Why did you turn away and disdain this?"
I said, “The Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy, has enriched me.”
I said, "The Bountiful Praiseworthy has enriched me."
