I sent something like a rebuff, but it was only

My excuse that I sent, like one confidently resorting to an excuse.

And I told myself, 'Do not be alarmed, for it is

Something, as has been said, that may help against time.'

And it was no match for the worth of affection and glory,

So accept it in proportion to misfortunes—or to my own worth.

And if I have not done well in my offering, then I

Will excel in my thanks for its gracious acceptance.

Your worth to me is the Nile's worth; and I,

Beside your lofty worth, am smaller than dust motes.

I was content, though my share of my days and your affection

Was dust; yet one like me is not content with a pittance.

    لَقيتُ بهِ الآمالَ يا بهْجَة الثّغْرِ

    A splendid, blessed letter from you came to me;

Through it I found my hopes fulfilled, O delight of the frontier!

It unveiled a virgin among the daughters of thought and led her as a bride

To my eye, swaying proudly in the patterned robes of ink.

    وقدْرُ المَعاني في الأصالةِ كالزُّهْرِ

    So her words are like flowers, and the flowers are in full bloom;

And her meanings, in nobility, rank with the radiant stars.

Stars of meaning in the sky of a page,

Yet the stars travel by night, while these do not.

It contained a kind of playful wit through which

I hoped for what has been said of wine's intoxication.

May God guard its noble course; how great are

The glad tidings it revealed and the cheer it displayed!

By my life, you have indeed reminded me of youth's reign,

And given me a kind of lawful magic.

And when that pleasantry arrived one morning,

I felt vigor in my good spirits for the rest of the day.

And especially if the weaver of its mantle is

The chief of discerning minds, the marvel of the age.

With it you spread the carpet I had folded away

For a time; and mine are the folding and unfolding of affairs.

And what a fine friend in goodness you are, holding fast

To the ways of sincerity, in private and in public.

And take it: enjoy it and pass it around,

Dawn-fresh in breath and sweet in fragrance.
