And a white thing, of the tree-born kind, appears,

with a cheek like a foreign woman’s mirror.

And sometimes it takes on a red hue,

its crimson deep, like one entangled in suspicion.

    تَرَى الصُّفْرَ الْوُجُوهَ بِهِ مُنِيبَهْ

    And sometimes there is a place of prayer upon it;

there you see yellow-faced ones turning in repentance.

It unfolds for you questions and meanings,

yet if someone asks it, it will not answer him.

And how many a beating it endures each day,

when a tax is levied upon a people!

And it contains grammar—no, rather, every field of knowledge—

and recites poetry of praise and backbiting.
