And a pearl of blossom in an emerald sheath,
A pearl of light in an emerald case
like Farqad’s radiance shining in the green sky.
As it shone among the greenery, reposing
كأنّas though فَتاةًa maiden جاءَهاcame to her منْfrom خَليلِهاher beloved
كِتابٌa letter بشَكْوىwith a lament of الحُبِّlove منْfrom غيرِwithout موْعِدِan appointed time
As though a maiden had received from her beloved
As if a girl received from her lover
a letter bearing love’s lament, without prior arrangement;
A letter complaining of love without appointment
فلَفّتْso she wrapped بمُخْضَرِّin the green of البُرودِthe mantles بَنانَهاher fingertips

so she wrapped her fingertips in green mantles,
She wrapped with the green brocade her fingers
out of devotion and reverence, to avoid touching it by hand.
Bashfully and reverently, not to be touched by hand.
