وَقَفَdevoted الْغَرَامُlove عَلَىto ثَنَاكَyour praise لِسَانِيmy tongue
رَعْياًout of regard لِمَاfor what أَوْلَيتَyou bestowed مِنْof إِحْسَانِkindness
Love has devoted my tongue to your praise,
out of regard for the kindness you have bestowed.
فَكَأَنَّمَاso it is as though شُكْرِيmy thanks لِمَاfor what أَوْلَيْتَهُyou bestowed it
شُكْرُthe thanks of الرِّيَاضِthe gardens لِعَارِضto the rain cloud of النيسَانِNisan (April)
So it is as though my thanks for what you bestowed
were the gardens’ thanks to Nisan’s rain cloud.
أَنَاI شِيعَةٌa partisan لَكَof yours حَيْثُwherever كُنْتَyou are قَضِيَّةٌa matter

I am your partisan wherever you are—a matter
on whose judgment no two souls have disagreed.
وَلَقَدْand indeed تَشَاجَرَتِclashed الرِّمَاحُthe spears فَكُنْتَand you were فِيin
مَيْدَانِthe field of نَصْرِكَyour victory فَارِسَthe knight of الْفُرْسَانِknights
And indeed the spears clashed, and you were in
the field of your victory the knight of knights.
وَرَوَيْتُand I narrated غُرَّillustrious مآثِرnoble deeds أَسْنَدْتُهَاI attributed them
لِعُلاَكَto your eminence بَيْنَamong صَحَائِحٍsound reports وَحِسَانِand good reports
And I narrated illustrious deeds, ascribing them
to your eminence, among reports both sound and good.
وَلأَنْتَand indeed you أَوْلَىmost deserving بِالتَّشيُّعِof allegiance شِيمَةٌa trait
لَمْnot تَتَّفِقْbefall لِسِوَاكَto anyone but you مِنْof إِنْسَانِa human being
And indeed you are most worthy of allegiance—a trait
that has fallen to no human being but you.
الشَّمْسُthe sun أَنْتَyou قَدِindeed انْفَرَدْتَyou stand alone وَهَلand can يُرَىbe seen

You are the sun; you stand alone. And can one see
among mortals, two suns on a single horizon?
جَبرْتَyou restored بِجَبْرِكَwith your succor كُلَّevery نَفْسٍsoul حُرَّةٍnoble
وَشَدَاand sang بِشُكْرِin thanks to اللَّهِGod كُلُّevery لِسَانِtongue
With your succor, you have restored every noble soul,
and every tongue has sung its thanks to God.
وَبَدَتْand appeared سُعُودُكَyour auspicious stars مُسْتَقِيماًstraight سَيْرُهَاtheir course

And your auspicious stars appeared, their course straight,
and rose high, so the two ill-omened stars fled before them.
فَاسْتَقْبِلِso welcome السَّعْدَgood fortune المُعَاوِدَreturning سَافِراًunveiling
عَنْfrom أَيِّwhat a وَجْهٍface لِلرِّضَاof contentment حُسَّانِexceedingly beautiful
So welcome returning good fortune, lifting the veil
from a face of contentment—how exquisitely fair!
وَابْغِand seek المَزِيدَmore بشْكُرِby thanking رَبِّكَyour Lord ولتَثِقْand trust
بِمُضَاعَفِin multiplied الإِنْعَامِbounty وَالإِحْسَانِand kindness
And seek more by thanking your Lord, and trust
in multiplied bounty and kindness.
فَالشُّكْرfor gratitude يُقْتَادُis led الْمَزِيدَfurther bounty رَكَائِباًas riding camels

For through gratitude, further bounty is led like riding camels
that visit your door in halters made from it.
ثُمَّthen السَّلاَمُpeace عَلَيْكَupon you يُزْرِيputs to shame عرْفُهُits fragrance

Then peace be upon you; its fragrance puts to shame
in sweetness, the scent of agarwood and balsam.
