تَبَلّجَshone forth بالشّبيبةِamid youth صُبْحُthe dawn of شَيْبيmy gray hair
فأدْبَرَthen retreated لَيْلَهاits night وولّىand fled
Amid my youth, the dawn of my gray hair broke;
My youth was illuminated by old age's dawn
Then youth's night retreated and fled.
Its night has turned its back and departed
ولمْand did not أسْتُرْI conceal بُدورَthe full moons of الصُّبْحِdawn جَهْلاًout of ignorance
وهلْand can يَخْفىbe hidden الصّباحُthe morning إذاwhen تجلّىit shines forth
I did not foolishly veil the full moons of dawn;
Yet I did not conceal the dawn's full moons in ignorance
And can morning be hidden when it shines forth?
Can the morning be hidden when it reveals itself?
لقدْindeed كبَحَcurbed المَشيبُgray hair جُموحَthe wildness of عَزْميmy resolve
بعَضِّwith the bite of لِجامِthe bridle of مَطيّتِهِits mount المُحَلّىornamented
Gray hair has indeed curbed my resolve's wildness
Old age has curbed my determination's zeal
With the bite of its mount's ornamented bridle.
With some of the draft of its sweetened chalice
فَياso, O عهْدَdays of الصِّباyouth سِرْgo فيin أمانِsafety

So farewell era of youth, go safely
And O draught of death, welcome!
