O passes of Shaʿīr, my caravan has plunged down you,

like sinners who plunged to the depths of blazing fire.

While we look out from atop a convex ridge,

the route has taken a concave shape,

with every plunging slope like a she-camel’s withers,

or every crooked stretch like a camel’s neck.

The shīn in your name is merely a lisper’s dot:

instead of saʿīr ('blazing fire'), he uttered shaʿīr ('barley').
