A stranger has called to you from the farthest of the two western lands,

And though the place of visitation is distant, you are near.

Emboldened by the bonds of hope, his gaze

Is lowered under modesty's rule, and uneasy.

He charges the full moon's disk with bearing a greeting,

When it sinks, and the sun when it sets,

So that it may return from those landmarks at dawn,

With the fragrance of an answering greeting already spread abroad.

And he entrusts the north wind with graces

Of love that no watcher has known.

And seeks their reply in the south wind's bosom,

Whenever it appears, with morning as its companion.

And he questions the bountiful palm, while his tears

Are dyed by passion with the henna of fresh blood.

And he follows the camels' tracks, escorting them,

While the camel-driver intones and a noble camel moans.

When the camel-hoofprints appear as prayer niches,

He falls upon them, bowing, and turns repentantly.

And he meets the pilgrimage mounts, worn out,

Utterly spent, while a discerning man has answered the call.

Then no speech remains but a groan and lamentation,

And no strength but a sigh and sobbing.

    عَلِيلٌ وَلِكَنْ مِنْ رَضَاكَ طَبيِبُ

    Parched with longing, yet your acceptance offers a watering place;

Ailing, yet your favor offers a physician.

Ah, would that I knew—though wishes are delusion,

And hopes may miss their mark, then strike it—

Will Najd come to my aid after the remoteness of its abode,

And will a dune cause grief after separation from it?

And will my debts be paid after time has delayed them,

And my sale be completed, though the goods are flawed?

Can I claim my due from fate, so that it yields willingly,

And call aloud for my share, so that it answers?

Ah, would that I knew: is there a watering place for my circling

With you, and have I any share in your favor?

But you are the generous lord, and his protected neighbor,

Whatever his condition, is never disappointed.

And how could patience ever run short for a petitioner,

When that court of refuge is spacious?

Nothing stirred me but the gleam of a lightning flash,

From which gray hair shines at night's temple.

Through it I recalled the Hijaz caravan, and neighbors

Whom a caller urged toward the Beloved.

So I spent the night: my eyelid, with the pearls of its tears,

Was rich, while my patience was plundered by sorrows.

Remembrance makes me sway, and heartache sweeps me away,

As a tender branch bends in the gardens.

And I summon wishes to soothe my longing,

But overpowering passion comes calling, and I swoon.

My aim, were I granted my wishes, is a visit,

At which passion and heart-throbbing are poured forth.

So, Habib's words, when he says in longing:

May a beloved homeland draw near to me.

I marveled at my sword, though it lay beside ghada coals

Within my heart, yet their melting heat had not melted it.

And I marvel that the spear does not sprout leaves in my hand,

While above it the rain of my tear-ducts pours.

O trees of that encampment, should the rain fail,

A torrent of falling tears would suffice you.

    فَعَهْدِيَ رَطْبُ الْجَانِبَيْن خَصِيبُ

    O traveler leaving the barren land, linger awhile;

For my covenant is moist on both sides and fertile.

O striker of the grudging fire-stick, be gentle

With yourself, for my Kharijite longing is Shabib.

O Seal of the Messengers, whose station is secure,

An exile's tale about you is strange.

A heart is turned upon the coals of separation,

Over which a well of tears is ladled out.

    أَأَبْصَرْتَ مَاءً ثَارَ عَنْهُ لَهيِبُ

    Yet, by God, it only blazes more fiercely;

Have you ever seen water from which a flame arose?

His night is a snake-bitten man's night, and its day,

When longing's headband is tightened, is grievous.

My love for you is guidance; by its light I found my way,

And my descent from the Companions links me to you.

It is glory enough for me that I belong to your Companions,

And am kin to the noble Khazrajis.

From your secure dwellings have turned away the foes'

Scorpions, whose creeping cannot be hidden.

Eager to extinguish a light you kindled,

So one is snatched away before it, and another despoiled.

How many a martyr has fallen in seeking your favor,

Shaded by a vulture and mourned by a wolf.

Unperfumed winds pass above their wounds,

And grow fragrant and sweet from their exhalations.

    وَهَلْ يَتَسَاوَى مَشْهَدٌ وَمَغِيبُ

    Defending you keeps us from you, without claiming credit;

And are presence and absence equal?

If favor from you is assured, wishes yield,

And an arrow's range is far, yet it strikes true.

But for you, the Romans' timber would never have been tested,

For the foreign cross's wood is hard.

Circumstances would nearly—were it not for rewards

You pledged, and a promise of victory—have inspired doubt.

Then whatever you wished of mighty victory and blessings,

The Rewarder has granted to the believers.

Pulpits of glory, from whose heights victory has called aloud,

And a preacher has spoken eloquently for the keen-edged sword.

We lead every neighing steed into their battle,

As a kohl-eyed creature is startled by creeping movement.

And we don coats of armor woven from certainty,

Fashioned by whoever chooses and turns repentantly.

When the Khatti spear quivers above their pool,

Their deep water and branch delight you.

So grant pardon and forbearance, and do not forget one crying out

By your might, hoping that an answerer will respond.

After God, we place our hope in your standing; indeed, it

Is surely an ample portion, rich in fulfillment.

God's blessing be upon you, as long as the open air is perfumed

By one who lavishes fragrant praise upon you.

And as long as a graceful form sways, making branches reel,

And as long as lightning's cool, bright-toothed mouth smiles.
