أميرٌa prince كأنّas though قُمَيْرَlittle moon الدُجَىnight's darkness
أفاضَpoured forth الضِّياءَthe radiance علَىupon صَفْحَتَيْهِhis two cheeks
A prince—as though night's little moon
A prince like the full moon of dusk
had poured its radiance upon his two cheeks.
Who spills light on his face
تملأَّbecame full قلْبيَmy heart منْwith حُبِّهِlove for him
غَداةَthe morning نظَرْتُI looked بعَيْنيwith my eye إلَيْهِat him
My heart brimmed with love for him
Fills my heart with love for him
the morning I looked upon him with my own eye.
Since the morning my eyes saw him
فَلاso may … not بسَطَstretch out الدّهْرُTime كفَّthe hand of الرّدَىdeath
لذاكَtoward that الشُّخَيْصِlittle figure وذاكَand that الوُجَيْهِlittle face
So may Time never stretch out death's hand
So time cannot extend the palm of harm
toward that little figure and that little face.
To that slender youth of radiant face
