I found the gifts of earth beneath you in worth,

So I offered you knowledge whose worth is exalted:

Choice pieces of history and literature whose

    Course breathed fragrance and whose blossom ripened;

And pearls of praise I culled from your eminence—

And how strange that the sea should be offered its own pearls!

They experienced the world's nature in ease and hardship,

And time's sweetness and bitterness put them to the test.

So none of them was overwhelmed by terror,

Nor did anyone's patience desert him in adversity.

And they upheld God's command; if death assailed,

God's supporting arm and His aid encompassed them.

So take from their stories every delightful tale,

Whose telling stays sweet with repetition and return.

And many a delightful anecdote and curious tale I have included,

With which the breast of the royal court is adorned.

The gift of one whose reliance rests on you alone,

And the service of a servant whose heart is devoted to you.

And I have named it, after seeking approval

For it, 'The Marvel of the Age'—the age whose pride is you.

    ومَنْ بلغَ المَجْهودَ قد بانَ عُذْرُهُ

    And I, though I have praised you at length, still fall short;

And whoever has done his utmost has made his excuse clear.
