أَأَبْصَرْتَhave you seen? مِنِّيin me فِيamong الْمَصَانِعِthe edifices قُبَّةًa dome
تَأَنَّقَlavished artistry فِيَّon me السَّعْدُgood fortune مِنْfrom كُلِّevery جَانِبِside
Have you beheld in me a dome among the edifices?
Have you seen a dome built by me in the factories
Good fortune has lavished artistry on me from every side.
Where fortune adorned me from every side?
فَتُتْلَىso are recited سُطُورُlines الْكَتْبِthe books فَوْقِيَabove me دَائِماًalways
وَتُعْرَضُand are paraded مِنْfrom تَحْتِيbeneath me سُطُورُranks الْكَتَائِبِthe battalions
Thus lines of books are always recited above me,
My lines are recited on me continuously
And beneath me the ranks of battalions are paraded.
While lines of misfortune are displayed under me
وَفِيand in سَاحَتِيmy courtyard مَسْعىًa place of striving لِطَالِبِfor a seeker of رَحْمَةٍmercy
وَمَأَمَنُand a refuge مُرْتَاعِa frightened person وَمَوْقِفُand a standing place تَائِبِa penitent
And in my courtyard is a place of striving for the seeker of mercy,
In my courtyard is a place for one seeking mercy
And a refuge for the frightened, and a station for the penitent.
And refuge for the frightened and a stopping place for the penitent
فَقُلْthen say فِيabout إِنِّيindeed I am لِلْمُؤَمِّلِfor the hopeful كَعْبَةٌa Kaaba
وَإِنْand though كُنْتُI was قَدْalready أَبْرِزْتُI was displayed فِيin زِيِّthe guise of كَاعِبِa maiden with budding breasts
Then say of me: I am a Kaaba for the hopeful,
Say that I am like the Kaaba for the hopeful
Though I have been displayed in the guise of a nubile maiden.
Even if I have appeared in the garb of a deceiver
أَنَاI الْغَادَةُthe graceful maiden الْحَسْنَاءُthe beautiful يُغْنِيdispenses جَمَالُهَاher beauty
عَنِwith الدُّرِّthe pearls مِنْfrom فَوْقِabove الطُّلَىthe necks وَالتَّرَائِبِand the upper chests
I am the fair, graceful maiden whose beauty dispenses
I am the beautiful, radiant one whose beauty
With pearls upon throats and bosoms.
Makes gems atop the hills and dunes unnecessary
وَمَاand not الْحْسْنُbeauty إِلاَّexcept مَاwhat يَكْونُis طَبيعَةًinnate
بِلاَwithout جُهْدِthe effort of مُحْتَالٍan artificer وَلاَnor كَسْبِthe labor of كَاسِبِa worker
And beauty is nothing but what is innate,
Beauty is only what comes naturally
Without an artificer's effort or a worker's toil.
Without struggling or earning like a worker
وَمِنْand of آيِتِيmy marvel أَنَّيthat I عَلَىdespite حَالِthe state of عِزَّتِيmy dignity
قَعَدْتُI sat بِبَابِat the gate of الْمُلْكِkingship مَقْعَدَthe seat of حَاجِبِa chamberlain
And a marvel of mine is that, despite my lofty rank,
And of my signs is that in my pride
I have taken a chamberlain's seat at the royal gate.
I sat at the door of the king like a guard
أَدُلُّI point عَلَىto مَاwhat حَازَهُhe has attained it مِنْof جَلاَلِةٍmajesty
وَكَمْand many a شَاهِدٍwitness أَبْدَيrevealed مَحَاسِنَthe merits of غَائِبِone absent
I point to the majesty he has attained,
I point to what he has of majesty
And many a witness has revealed the merits of one absent.
And how many absent witnesses show my hidden beauty
فَدَامَso may he endure جَمِيعَunited الشَّمْلِthe company فِيin ظِلِّthe shade of نِعْمَةٍa blessing
مِنَfrom اللهِGod مَشْمٌولاًenfolded بِحُسْنِin the goodness of الْعَوَاقِبِthe outcomes
So may he endure, his company united, in the shade of a blessing
So may the whole group remain under the shade of
From God, enfolded in favorable outcomes.
God's blessing, enveloped in good consequences
