    في سَيْرِها مُعْتَبَرٌ للحِجا

    These eight have traversed the night's darkness;

    in their journey lies a lesson for the intellect.

    They passed, and through them a hopeful man had attained

    whatever he wished and hoped for among his desires.

    So he unsheathed the resolve that never faltered,

    and cloaked himself in the night that had grown still.

    Fear turns him back, yet he is summoned,

    when he heeds fear, by the herald of hope.

    واقْتَحَمَ البحْرَ فقالَ النَّجا

    He crossed the land, then footsoreness spoke;

    and plunged into the sea, then deliverance spoke.

    And he delighted in what endures, so quickened his steps,

    and passed by what perishes without turning aside.

    فاسْمَحْ لمَنْ قارَبَ أو لَجّجا

    My lord, this is the way of those who love;

    so be gracious to whoever draws near or ventures into the deep.

    And follow, in your dealings with him, a path

    that rises above a praiser and whoever satirizes.

    And read the copy, setting aside—in favor of

    the secret of its meanings—its densely packed script.

    And how could he fail to gain the inheritance of glory,

    he who is heir to the Ansar and the Khazraj?
