We accepted your black steeds when

we had tested the handsome thoroughbreds among them.

They came, with a foal behind each mare,

each visibly bestowing her traits upon it.

So we saw to their grazing, and opened

a field for them in the enemies’ lands.

And we wished to ride them, so we fashioned

a rein for them from a leather thong.

A troop of magic arrived before them,

from a letter through which it took minds captive.

Just as armies lead full-grown steeds alongside,

in readiness for an encounter, whatever it may be.

Nothing pleased my eye or delighted my heart

like its excellence in artistry and eloquence.

    لَمْ أَجِدْ لِلثَّنَا عَلَيْكَ لِسَانَا

    If anyone gives gifts, it is one like you who gives;

I found no tongue to praise you.
