May you, O grave, be greeted with sweet basil and repose,

by God's good pleasure with him who dwells in you, for all time,

until people rise, their faces bowed in humility,

before the Raiser of the dead, at the place of the Gathering.

And you are no grave; you are but a garden,

blessed with sweet basil, fragrant with wafting perfume.

And had I done you full justice, I would have said nothing

but: 'O sheaths of blossoms, or shell of pearls!'

And O burial niche of piety, O burial place of guidance,

and O falling-place of eminence, O setting-place of the full moon!

Indeed, what a caliph has laid down his saddle in you—

of deep-rooted nobility, a shining glory among the sons of Nasr!

Indeed, honor, glory, and eminence have settled in you,

and the full moon of night, and the refuge from terror.

And who is like Abu al-Hajjaj, guardian of guidance's sanctuary?

And who is like Abu al-Hajjaj, effacer of unbelief's darkness?

Leader of guidance, rain of generosity, repeller of foes,

far-reaching in the arena of glory and pride.

A scion of Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah of the Khazraj,

and such a lofty house and rank suffice you!

When overlooking faults, forbearance, and piety are mentioned,

and you speak of his eminence, speak of the sea.

The vicissitudes of time betrayed him; and do you see

lasting life for any living soul, or permanence in any state?

Such is time, with two faces: a day and a night,

and whoever has two faces makes amends through treachery.

He departed a martyr, prostrate in his prayer,

deep-rooted in piety, his tongue moist with remembrance.

And the blessed month knew the true worth of what

he lavished in bounty and rendered fully in benevolence.

And at the dawn of Eid al-Fitr, the decree was already sealed,

and there was nothing to break the fast but the cup of martyrdom.

Destined for him, though he was great in majesty

and rank, was one base in person, character, and rank:

a wretch to whom good fortune had come from him,

and an outcast of his people, who brought the monstrous deed.

And a base man's crime does not detract from one exalted,

and the reasons for God's decree transcend all counting.

For here is 'Ali, who died at the hands of Ibn Muljam,

and Wahshi struck down Hamzah, possessor of honor.

We prepare the Mashrafi swords and spears,

yet God's decree comes knocking from where we do not know.

And whoever trusts the base world

to remain in one state for a day has come away with loss.

So O King of the dominion that never ends,

and O You to whom judgment belongs in creation and command,

enfold our sins in the veil of Your pardon,

for we hope for no covering other than Your pardon.

And favor the Emir of the Muslims with mercy

that lodges him in the abode of permanence and reward.

For what is with You, O God, has a better reward

and is more lasting; man's worldly life is a deception for the deluded.

And bless the Guide, whose intercession is accepted, as long as there appear

the signs of radiant morning at the rising of dawn.
