بَانَdeparted يَوْمَon the day of الْخَمِيسِThursday قُرَّةُdelight عَيْنِيmy eye
حَسْبِيsufficient for me اللَّهُGod أَيَّwhat a مَوْقِفِscene بَيْنِparting
The delight of my eye departed on Thursday.
God is sufficient for me—what a scene of parting!
لَوْif جَنَىbrought about مَوْقِفُmoment النَّوَىseparation حَينَdeath حَيٍّa living soul
كَانَwould have been يَوْمُthe day الْوَدَاعِfarewell وَاللَّهِby God حَيْنِيmy death
If a moment of separation could bring death to a living soul,
the day of farewell would, by God, have been my death.
ضَايَقَتْنِيoppressed me صُرُوفُvicissitudes هَذِيthese اللَّيَالِيnights
وَأَطَالَتْand prolonged هَمِّيmy grief وَألْوَتْand delayed repayment بِدَيْنِيof my debt
The vicissitudes of these nights have oppressed me,
and prolonged my grief and delayed repayment of my debt.
وَطَنٌa homeland نَازِحٌfar away وَشَمْلٌand a company شَتِيتٌscattered
كَيْفَhow يَبْقَىlives on مُعَذَّبٌone in torment بَعْدَafter ذَيْنِthose two
A distant homeland, and companions scattered—
how can one in torment live on after those two?
يَاO إِلاَهِيmy God أَدْرِكْcome to the aid of بِلُطْفِكَwith Your kindness ضَعْفِيmy weakness
إِنَّindeed مَاwhat أَشْتَكِيهِI complain of it لَيْسَis not بِهَيْنِat all slight
O my God, with Your kindness, come to the aid of my weakness.
Indeed, what I complain of is no light matter.
