Oh, if only I knew whether they might return

one day—and with God lies knowledge of the unseen—

those hours of delight beneath the shade of youth,

green at their edges, sweet in their breezes.

Days when we feared no blow of separation,

for we were safe from its onslaught.

My caravan was mighty against time,

and our company was strung together like pearls.

Until, when the cups of love tasted sweet,

and I said, "The eyes of time have fallen asleep,"

things came that had not been reckoned

by me—and the nights' colors are of many kinds.

Who, then, will give me an answer today?

Leave me to question the east and south winds.

May God not burden tender souls

with an anguish of longing they cannot bear.

The taste of separation, my friend, is bitter,

and the fire of thought is the torment of burning.

Through estrangement, my soul has reached my collarbones.

Is there, then, a path to winning favor?

By God, estrangement is nothing but torment.

Oh, how grievous is what hearts bear of it!

The day is as long as the Day of Reckoning,

and in the night no star sets.

Perhaps the pardon of the powerful king

will repel time's tyranny, which has grown insolent.

How long, because of its treacherous turns,

must I cry out in complaint—and how long?

Abu al-Hajjaj is enough for me as a champion,

who gathers what was scattered of my company.

For he is mankind's most protective shield,

if one day the seas of war swell.

And for the realm, exalted in dignity, he is

a fortified refuge against the onset of calamities.

A king whose neighbor is honored, lofty in glory,

whose pardon is hoped for by those who have sinned.

In his character and in his outward appearance,

he is the full moon, the sun, and the meadow of the hills.

troubles are dispelled by his noble countenance.

asking pardon for herself and acceptance,

    ومُلْكُكَ البَرُّ العَطوفُ الوَصولْ

    and asking you to overlook what has passed;

and your rule is benevolent, compassionate, ever generous.

Estrangement, like embers of ghada wood, has troubled her,

and reproach has worn her thin, so she has come to say:

I have had enough, Abd Allah, of this reproach of yours.

If I have sinned, you see that I repent.

Yesterday the humble servant sinned; today he has repented.

And repentance erases sins, my beloved.
