مَوْلاَيَmy lord لاَزِلْتَmay you ever remain فِيin أَمَانِsafety
مَوْلاَيَ لاَزِلْتَ فِي أَمَانِ
سِتُّsix تَقَضَّتْhave elapsed مِنَof الزَّمَانِtime
سِتُّ تَقَضَّتْ مِنَ الزَّمَانِ
My lord, may you ever remain in safety.
My Master, you remain in my safekeeping
Six have elapsed in the course of time.
Six have passed of time
كَأَنَّهَاas though it were الْعِقْدُthe necklace رَابَcaused disquiet مِنْهُfrom it
كَأَنَّهَا الْعِقْدُ رَابَ مِنْهُ
سُقُوطُthe falling سِتٍّsix مِنَof الْجُمَانِthe pearls
سُقُوطُ سِتٍّ مِنَ الْجُمَانِ
As though it were a necklace, troubled by
As though a string of pearls slipped from it
the falling of six of its pearls.
The falling of six pearls from a necklace
مُنْتَهَبُspoils الدهرِof time كُلَّevery وَقْتٍmoment
مُنْتَهَبُ الدهرِ كُلَّ وَقْتٍ
قِطَافُهُits harvests عَذْبَةُsweet الْمَجانِيthe yields
قِطَافُهُ عَذْبَةُ الْمَجانِي
Time's spoils at every moment
Plundered is time, at every moment
are its harvests, sweet to reap.
Its plucking is the sweetest of fruits
وَيَقْتَضِيand it exacts حَقَّهُits due غِلاَباby force
وَيَقْتَضِي حَقَّهُ غِلاَبا
بِلاَwithout تَوارٍconcealment وَلاَand without تَوَانِيdelay
بِلاَ تَوارٍ وَلاَ تَوَانِي
And it exacts its due by force,
And it demands its right insistently
without concealment or delay.
Without retreat or hesitation
فَافْطِنْso be alert لَهُto it إِنَّهُindeed it is غَيُورٌjealous
فَافْطِنْ لَهُ إِنَّهُ غَيُورٌ
وَارْمِand cast إِلَيْهِto it بِكُلِّwith every فَانِيperishable thing
وَارْمِ إِلَيْهِ بِكُلِّ فَانِي
So be alert to it: it is jealous,
So be attentive to it, it is jealous
and cast to it all that perishes.
And throw yourself to it, everything perishable
وَاسمُand rise عَنabove الَكوْنthe world تَبْقَyou shall remain مِنْهُfrom it
وَاسمُ عَن الَكوْن تَبْقَ مِنْهُ
وَمِنْand from أَذَىharm الْكَوْنِthe world فِيin أمَانِsafety
وَمِنْ أَذَى الْكَوْنِ فِي أمَانِ
And rise above the world; you shall remain
And name aside from creation you remain
safe from it and from the world's harm.
And from the harm of creation, in safety
بِلاَwithout اشْتِيَاقٍlonging وَلاَand without فِرَاقٍseparation
بِلاَ اشْتِيَاقٍ وَلاَ فِرَاقٍ
وَلاَand without زَمَانٍtime وَلاَand without مَكَانِplace
وَلاَ زَمَانٍ وَلاَ مَكَانِ
Without longing or separation,
Without longing or separation
and without time or place.
Neither time nor place
فَأَيُّso what دَيْرٍmonastery بِغَيْرِwithout غَيْرotherness
فَأَيُّ دَيْرٍ بِغَيْرِ غَيْر
وَأَيْنُّand where خَمْرٍwine بِلاَwithout دِنَانِwine jars
وَأَيْنُّ خَمْرٍ بِلاَ دِنَانِ
So what monastery is without otherness?
So which monastery without the Other
And where is wine without wine jars?
And where is wine without cups
وَأَيْنَand where مَنْone who يَكْشِفُunveils الْخَبَايَاthe hidden things
وَأَيْنَ مَنْ يَكْشِفُ الْخَبَايَا
وَأَيْنand where مَنْone who يَفْهَمُunderstands الْمَعَانِيthe meanings
وَأَيْن مَنْ يَفْهَمُ الْمَعَانِي
And where is one who unveils the hidden things?
And where is one who reveals secrets
And where is one who understands the meanings,
And where is one who understands meanings
فَيُبْصِرُso he sees الْوِتْرَthe odd number دُونَwithout شَفْعٍan even number
فَيُبْصِرُ الْوِتْرَ دُونَ شَفْعٍ
وَيُبْصِرُand he sees الْفَرْدَthe single one دُونَwithout ثَانِيa second
وَيُبْصِرُ الْفَرْدَ دُونَ ثَانِي
so he sees the odd without the even,
Who sees the single string without the double
and sees the single one without a second?
And sees the individual without a second
