وقائِلَةٍand a woman saying صِفْdescribe ليfor me فَدَيْتُكَmay I be your ransom رِحْلَةًa journey
وقائِلَةٍ صِفْ لي فَدَيْتُكَ رِحْلَةً
عُنيتَyou were occupied بِهاwith it ياO شِقّةَhalf القَلْبِthe heart منْfrom بَعْديafter me
عُنيتَ بِها يا شِقّةَ القَلْبِ منْ بَعْدي
And a woman said, “Describe for me—may I be your ransom—a journey
A questioner asked, describe for me, I implore you, a journey
you were occupied with, O half of my heart, in my absence.”
That you undertook, O torment of my heart, after me
فقُلْتُso I said خُذيهاtake it منْfrom لِسانِa tongue بَلاغةٍeloquence
فقُلْتُ خُذيها منْ لِسانِ بَلاغةٍ
كماjust as نُظِمَwere strung الياقوتُthe rubies والدُّرُّand the pearls فيin عِقْدِa necklace
كما نُظِمَ الياقوتُ والدُّرُّ في عِقْدِ
So I said, “Take it from a tongue of eloquence,
So I said, take it from the tongue of eloquence
as rubies and pearls are strung in a necklace.”
As pearls and gems are strung into a necklace
