الخَطْبُthe plight صعْبٌhard والمَرامُand the goal بَعيدُfar away
Patience is praiseworthy, save in love for you.
Patience, except for your love, is praiseworthy
The plight is hard, and the goal far away.
The matter is difficult and the goal is far

O you, the moon of the Hijaz, whose
O moon of Hijaz whose light
radiant brow dispels the pitch-black nights.
Illuminates the dark, starry night

I affirmed your oneness in my heart, hoping that
I made your being the core of my heart so that
this affirmation of oneness might save it from yearning's fire.
Oneness with you saves it from the hellfire of passion
وجَعَلْتُand I made حُبَّكَlove for you مَذهَباًa doctrine وشَريعَةًand a sacred law

And I made love for you a doctrine and a sacred law;
And I made your love my creed and law
I followed it—oh, how excellent such following is!
Which I cling to, O the best thing to cling to!
إنْif نالَتِattained الشُّهَداءُthe martyrs جَنّاتِthe gardens of العُلىthe heights
ولهُمْand for them نَعيمٌbliss عنْدَهاin them وخُلودُand immortality
If martyrs have gained the gardens on high,
If martyrs attained the Gardens of Highness
and in them have bliss and immortality,
And have bounty and eternity there
فلقَدْthen indeed شَهِدْتُI bore witness بأنّthat قُرْبَكَnearness to you جنّةٌa paradise

then I have borne witness that nearness to you is paradise,
I bear witness that your nearness is a paradise
in truth, and that I am a martyr to passionate love.
Truly, and I by passion am martyred
ياO مَنْyou who تَشابَهَwere alike منْهُof him فيin ضُعْفِweakness of القُوَىstrength

O you, in whom these are alike in weakness:
O you who resembles in weakness of strength
a waist, a bewitching gaze, and vows.
A waist, an enchanting glance, and promises
جِسْميmy body ولَحْظُكَand your gaze فيin السَّقامِsickness تَشارَكاboth shared
واللّهُand God يعْلَمُknows أيُّناwhich of us المَفْؤودُstricken at heart
My body and your gaze have shared in sickness;
My body and your glance both fell ill
and God knows which of us is stricken at heart.
And Allah knows which one is most missed
إنْif كُنْتَyou are تُنْكِرُyou deny ماwhat أُلاقِيI endure فيin الهَوىlove

If you deny what I endure in love,
If you deny what I suffer from passion
then longing is the judge, and tears the witnesses.
Then my anguish bears witness, and my tears testify
أصْبَحْتُI have become فيin شُغْلٍa preoccupation بحُبِّكَwith love for you شاغِلall-consuming
لاneither العَدْلُjustice يَنْهانيrestrains me ولاnor التّفْنيدُreproach
I have become absorbed in an all-consuming love for you;
I have busied myself with loving you, preoccupying me
neither justice restrains me nor reproach.
Neither justice stops me nor disapproval
تهْفوwafts الصَّباthe east wind سَحَراًbefore dawn فأسْتَجْفيso I deem unkind الصَّباthe east wind

The east wind wafts before dawn, yet I find the east wind unkind;
The morning breeze blows gently so I hold back from it
and I choke on limpid water, though it is cool.
While it is cool and pleasant
وأمِيلُand I turn away عنْfrom ظِلِّthe shade of الأراكَةِthe arak tree ضاحِياًexposed to the sun

And I turn from the arak tree's shade into the sun,
And I avoid the shade of the trellis
though its canopy is spacious and far-reaching.
Though its arcade is spacious and long

O days at ‘Ayn al-Dam‘, the Spring of Tears—how many pearls
O days of the tearful eye, how much pearl
of tears you bestowed! May you return!
Did you force it to shed, hoping it will return

Your soft breezes drift by night, cool and moist,
Your soft glances flow gently at night
and fierce longing for you shakes me.
Stirring in me intense longing for you

How many hours of companionship I spent in your midst!
How many blissful hours with you I spent
Whoever gained such an hour missed nothing he sought.
He who gets them will lack no wants

And many a playful one tugging at a folded tress,
Flirting with the bending branch, playing
the east wind flutters against his [unclear word], and he sways.
As the morning breeze makes it sway

Languor is spread across his glances,
Sickness is scattered in its glances
and magic is knotted within his eyelids.
And magic is knotted in its eyelids

واللّحْظُand the gaze منْamong أكْواسِهِhis goblets معْدودُcounted
I drank with him and drank what remained of his wine;
I conversed with it and drank the excess of its wine
and his gaze was numbered among his goblets.
While the glance from its cups is measured
ولقَدْand indeed هَمَمْتُI intended بأنْto أرَوّيَI quench غُلّةًa burning thirst

And indeed I meant to quench a burning thirst,
And I almost decided to quench
whose inferno has fuel between my ribs,
The fires in my chest with it as fuel

and divulge a secret in my heart, before which stands
And reveal a secret in my heart, keeping it
a door of concealment, locked and barred.
Safe inside, for silence has a bolted, blocked door

How many pearl necklaces conversation scattered,
How many pearls did speech scatter in necklaces
from which necklaces were strung to bind affection together!
That were strung together for the union of love

And though the watcher kept away from us, there never departed
And if the watcher spied on us, no watcher
from us a guardian of chastity, ever present.
Could stop us, for chastity has a defender

Were it not for love of you, O Abu al-Sharaf al-Rida,
Were it not for your love, O noble one pleased with me
existence would have no existence for me.
Existence itself would not exist for me

Speak on, undisputed chief of the clan:
Alas! O pillar of the living who does not retaliate
my heart is stricken by what it suffers from you.
My heart by what it encounters from you is a pillar

If you turn away, allow me to return the greetings
or if you are absent, send your phantom back to me.
Or if you are absent, send your image back

O son of the most sublime, generous Hashimites

Valor is submissive to them, and so is generosity

Be gentle with hearts that love has possessed,
Gently, for the passion has possessed a love-mad heart
for gentleness is counted among your virtues.
Gentleness is counted among your traits
