أَبَاO Abu الفَضْلِal-Fadl عَاتِبْreproach أَبَاكَyour father الرّضَىal-Rida
وَقُلْand say يَغْفِرُmay forgive اللهُGod مَاwhat قَدْalready مَضَىhas passed
O Abu al-Fadl, reproach your father, al-Rida,
O Abul Fadl, reproach your father for his displeasure,
And say, 'May God forgive what has already passed.'
And say: May God forgive what is past,
وَذَكِرْهُand remind him مِنِّيfrom me وِدَاداًaffection قَدِيماًold
وَعَهْداًand a covenant أَبَىrefused اللهُGod أَنْthat يُنْقَضَاbe broken
And remind him, on my behalf, of an old affection,
And remind him of my enduring affection,
And a covenant God refused to let be broken.
And a bond which God has prevented from being severed,
وَسَلْهُand ask him عَوَائِدَcustomary acts إِغْضَائِهِhis forbearance
فَقَلْبِيَfor my heart فِيin جَمَرَاتِembers الغَضَاghada wood
And ask him for his customary forbearance,
And ask him about his returning aversion,
For my heart is amid the embers of ghada wood.
For my heart is in the embers of estrangement.
جَفَاforsook النَّوْمُsleep جَفْنِيَmy eyelid لَمَّاwhen جَفَاhe grew distant
وَأَعْرَضَand turned away أُنْسِيَmy solace إِذْwhen أَعْرَضَاhe turned away
Sleep forsook my eyelid when he grew distant,
Sleep has deserted my eyelids since he turned away,
And my solace turned away when he turned away.
And my intimacy departed when he turned away,
وَلَكِنَّنِيyet I أَرْتَجِيI hope for عَطْفَهُhis kindness
وَشِيكاًsoon وَآمُلand I hope مِنْهُfrom him الرِّضَىfavor
Yet I hope for his kindness
But I hope for his kindness,
Soon, and I hope for his favor.
Soon, and I hope for his pleasure.
