فلَهْفيso my anguish علىfor الجَفْنِthe eyelid القَريحِsore المُسَهَّدِkept sleepless
I lay sleepless, and the night’s darkness had its stride fettered.
So alas for my sore, sleepless eyelid.
وماand never بُليَتْwas afflicted نفْسُthe soul of امْرئٍa man متطرِّفٍseeking novelties
بأوْحَشَwith anything more forbidding منْthan عَبْدٍa slave عَبوسٍscowling مُقَيَّدِfettered
And no novelty-seeking man’s soul has ever been afflicted
with anything more forbidding than a scowling, fettered slave.
