Nothing has ruined souls but hope.

And it is a delusion on which no action rests.

From it a person conceives an illusion that has no

    present, nor past, nor future.

There is no living soul upon the face of the earth

but an allotted span has already passed over it.

Had they been formed from something other than earth,

the plain and the mountain would have been filled with them.

There is nothing there but a morsel made ready

for death, who is the impatient eater.

And the promise is true, while humankind is heedless.

They have been deceived by the fleeting present and led astray.

Where are those who built high and planted,

and prepared resting places, spread bedding, and provided shade?

Where are those who enjoyed comforts that deepened their sorrow

when they were led to the dust and departed?

Their loved ones could not protect them, but only

weep over their parting and wail.

For God's sake, care for your soul, the one most deserving of

the counsel you have saved and the rebuke it accepts.

Do not leave it in blindness and bewilderment,

heedless of the terror of what lies before it.

Make the perishable seem worthless to it, and seek its detachment,

and stir its longing for what it will face.

And go to God with it in desperate need,

until you see the journey grow easy for it.

    وَاللَّهُ عَنْ حِكْمَتِهِ لاَ يُسْأَلُ

    It is passing away, and abiding thereafter;

and God is not questioned about His wisdom.

O delight of the eye, and O its sorrow,

on the day people are repaid in full for what they have done.
